Product Description

Manufacturer's Description

Season Progression:

  • Day by day, week by week, season by season progression
  • Win races to earn money, trophies and to qualify for other races
  • Use cash to hire new staff, improve your facilities, buy new horses and place simulated bets

Horse Breeding:

  • Breed from your horses: Send your mares to be covered, or raise funds by using your top stallions as studs
  • Breeding will combine attributes from both horses to create a new unique thoroughbred
Stable Management:
  • Hire and fire jockeys. The better your jockeys the more races your horses will win
  • Hire and fire trainers. The better your trainers, the more of your horses' potential will be used
  • Hire and fire betting managers. Betting managers can place simulated bets on all races, even the ones you don't attend. But how good they are will dictate whether you see ever-increasing winnings or plummeting losses
  • Expand your stables. The bigger the stables, the more horses you can own the more horses you own the more races you can win!

Simulated betting options:
Frankie Dettori Racing allows you to place multiple simulated bet types on any and all races in a race meet.

  • Simple bets - Win or Place
  • Accumulator bets - Double or Treble
  • Combination bets - Trixie, Patent, Yankee etc.
  • Forecast bets - Quinella, Exacta, Trifecta, Superfecta etc.

Create my own horse:
You can create your own horse for use in simulation mode or season mode. You can alter the horse's name, age, colour, markings and performance statistics. In season mode you have to buy any horses you create, so if you create one with perfect stats it's going to be pretty expensive! Using the season mode you can create horses that represent the appearance and performance of real world horses, and then pitch them against each other. This allows you to recreate classic races, and also to create fantasy races. If you want to see whether Makybe Diva would beat Pharlap in the Melbourne Cup; simply create horses that have the performance characteristics of those real horses and pitch them against each other in a 3200m race at Flemington.

Licensed race events included:
Here's a list of just some of the races included

  • Turnbull Stakes
  • AAMI Victoria Derby
  • The Melbourne Cup
  • Crown Oaks
  • Emirates Stakes
  • The Cox Plate
  • BMW Caulfield Cup
  • AJC Derby
  • Doncaster Handicap
  • AJC Oaks
  • Sydney Cup

3.0 out of 5 stars Good fun but less addictive than most, 22 Jul 2007

Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
Before I review this game, I'll talk about the set-up.

There are four modes: Betting Party, where you can bet on horses and watch the races (which sounds tedious but is actually quite fun), Jockey Championship, where you choose a race and take part yourself in either easy, medium or hard mode (and unlock various special features and tracks by winning), Simulation mode, where you can create your own horses or choose default versions to either ride or bet on, and Season Mode, which is the main focus of the game, where you set up a stable, buy, create (and buy) ,breed, sell, bet on or ride horses in order to make as much money as possible over 10 seasons. You can also hire jockeys (including Frankie Dettori), betting managers and trainers.

Good points: A great deal of effort has gone into this game. Famous tracks like Ascot have been licensed and faithfully recreated. The commentary adds excitement to the races - in fact thousands of words have been recorded, so if you create and name your own horse with a typical racing name, the chances are it will be in its vocabulary and will be used, eg (this is very cheesy) "and Black Beauty is away with a huge margin", which adds to the racing atmosphere. Motion-capture has been used to animate the horses. You can design your own horse and then buy it, or breed one for free from your own stable. You can bet and watch races, or hire staff to bet and race for you. You can also play online if you have Ethernet.

Bad points: Despite the licensed tracks and motion-capture, the graphics are rather basic - they might have been able to get away with this on PS1. The loading times are a pain - when you go to a race or between game modes it requires about 10 seconds to make the switch. Although it's easy to go bankrupt in the first year, once you have a good horse and money, it becomes too easy to just hire staff to do all the jobs for you, ie race and bet, so you have nothing to do. The 10-year season is also quite restrictive. Unless you play this game online, rather oddly there is no 2-player option.

I gave this game 4 stars for enjoyment as the actual race modes are good fun and there is a variety of tracks to choose from. However, despite the effort that's gone into it, overall it only gets 3 since past a certain point there isn't anything to get you to pick up the controller - it can all be done for you. There just doesn't seem to be much motivation and the constant loading slows it down. It's also a shame that you can't have 2-player matches without an Ethernet. I would rent this game before buying it.

5.0 out of 5 stars FUNTASTIC, 24 Feb 2007

Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
I have recently written a review on the horse racing tycoon game, however this is much better. unlike many other horse racing games this is like 3 games in 1, be a jockey, a better, or own a stables. I have only played the stables game so far and i am hooked. the only trouble is how easy it is to go bankrupt, it took 2 hours and too many games to count before, i got a decent set up. ( tip buy an expensive horse ). I loved choosing my horses races from listed to G1's. seeing your horses race is almost as good as watching tv. the only downsize is the loading time and the fact that i now have so many horses that i have to have pen and paper for when they are racing. best racing manager game at the moment, at the time of writting this.

4.0 out of 5 stars Really good, 31 Jan 2007

I really liked this game, although it took a bit of getting used to. Sometimes it takes a bit of time to load ceratin parts of it which can be a bit of a pain but the graphics are really good.

It took me a while to figure out the secret of racing the horse well, and in the season mode where you run your own stables, its quite easy to go bankrupt which is annoying.

All in all though I enjoyed the game and if you like horse racing games this one is worth a try.
