Product Description

In Franck Guerin's feature debut a quiet, rural village in France becomes saturated with anxiety when a tragic accident results in the death of a local boy. The heat-drenched summer landscape acquires a sinister aspect as everyone looks for someone to blame. Amidst this tense dissection of a small community's secrets the film casts a restrained yet penetrating gaze upon the life-changing summer of a teenage boy. After the death of his best friend, Sebastien has to come to terms with conflicting feelings towards him, a mix of longing and resentment complicated by past bereavements, class difference and Sebastien's burgeoning, uncertain sexuality. Everything comes together in a beautiful, disconcerting mix of haunting atmosphere and understated psychological exploration. Winner - Best European Film at New York film Fest. Winner - Best Film at Namur French Film Fest.

Review

Beautiful boys and unfulfilled homoerotic desires, which have become a subgenre in recent French cinema, are nicely exemplified in Franck Guerin's feature debut --Variety

2.0 out of 5 stars If you have time to kill..., 25 April 2008
By C. Robert Clay "rob1957" (Northampton, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
If you have time to kill, it will fritter away an evening, looking at tense faces and accusing stares in a small French village. Not quite sure why it is listed in with gay films, because there is nothing gay about it, unless you count the odd tentative longer-than-usual looks between adoloescents. They never amount to anything more, and the whole film seems to be trying to be something that it isn't. Loose storyline and plot, and scenes which lurch from one person to another, full of suspenseful music, but no suspense. The film raises a lot more questions than it answers. Whilst you are forever waiting for the gripping culmination of all those dreamy scenes, it never appears, and suddenly you are assaulted by the end credits.

4.0 out of 5 stars Brooding film which makes you work things out for yourself, 5 Oct 2008
By Andrew (London, England) - See all my reviews
I find myself agreeing with bits of other previous reviews marked both good and bad. The film has that difficult to understand element which makes you confused at various points about what is happening - but at least you usually get your answers without having to wait too long and then what you've just seen makes sense. The ending is quite abrupt and you think well, what the..?! You seem to always be catching up with understanding throughout the film, understanding what is happening to the characters and what the plot is all about. I think actually the film is very cleverly constructed - I don't think the position of the viewer 'always being a bit behind' is unintentional and it reminded me in several ways of a classic Claude Chabrol film. Le Boucher in particular. This is classic sleepy small town provincial France, hot summer days, beautiful dreamy landscapes of fields, into which an array of locals and family members are taking part in an unfolding drama. They are all aware of the central tragedy but at the same time mostly unaware of the main character drama of the young man understanding himself and coming to terms with things. There are lots of long looks, either at each other or into space, and you wonder what they mean and what the characters are thinking. You are never sure if you really understand the characters - they don't actually say much about themselves. The beautiful soundtrack captures the atmosphere of brooding unease and you are constantly expecting something dramatic to happen - but it doesn't. The film ends abruptly but that's also clearly intentional. You have just witnessed a slice of life in a particular place with particular characters but you don't get lots of answers. You have to kind of work out for yourself what is going on and who the people really are. I found this kind of fascinating. I think this is a very cleverly constructed and characterised film. To remind me of the great Chabrol impressed that on me.

5.0 out of 5 stars French Longeur, 28 Feb 2008
For those who love the beauty of the french countryside coupled with the beauty of french youth this film will strike a musical chord of orchestral resonance. The plot is slim but the longeur of the scenes and character progression is superb. The angst of not being able to ever express to your first love how you feel because they have been prematurely taken from you is heartbreaking to watch as the lead character tries to come to terms with not only his loss but his own sexuality - especially when another high school class mate comes forward as being attracted to him (and happens to be the son of the Mayor who is implicated in the untimely death of the young man). The photography is exquisite and the soundtrack sublime. Overall I loved this film for it's sheer brilliance and tone - as emotionally satisfying as Le Fate Ignoranti.
