Manufacturer's Description

The legendary game that single-handedly invented a genre is back and jam-packed with all-new enhancements. After years of living in peace and harmony, the inhabitants of Timber's Island are shocked when their tropical paradise is invaded by a giant, hideous space pig! To thwart Wizpig's nefarious plans, explore the sprawling island, unlock hidden racetracks, and drive, hover and fly against colorful characters in high-octane competitions!

Diddy Kong Racing DS offers three types of vehicles: karts, hovercraft and airplanes. The drivers range from the quick and the small to heavyweights who specialize in bashing rivals off the course. Duel with classic DKR power-ups like oil slicks, gas clouds, land mines, super shields, speed boosts, homing missiles and magnets. In Diddy Kong Racing DS, you'd better be ready for anything under the sun!

Your host, a gregarious elephant named Taj, greets you in a grassy meadow. Drive over bridges, through sparkling surf and around volcanoes. Start racing. You'll have to speed through a huge variety of racing challenges if you want to unlock all the island's secrets, complete the adventure and save your friends from the parlous pig.

3.0 out of 5 stars A Nintendo 64 classic made portable but still two generations late, 10 April 2007

Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
I really loved this game on the Nintendo 64 and played it obsessively until I had worked through every single race, and beaten all the bosses (bosses in a racing game? indeed! you race against a giant opponent, it's brilliant). Because of this I was keen to pick it up on the DS (US version - UK version will be identical, I am sure) and relieve those old memories. In this respect the game didn't disappoint, I was transported back to the dreamy, kids cartoon-style world of Diddy Kong Racing with its brilliant themed ice, jungle, fire and water levels.

However, my enjoyment was largely a nostalgic one - I was enjoying the game because I enjoyed it "back in the day" and could forgive the way it looks and feels now. Unfortunately, in objective terms I have to admit that the game does feel dated, even running on a handheld. The superb Super Mario Kart DS simply blows Diddy Kong Racing out of the water. If you are a Kart racing obsessive or a fan of the game on Nintendo 64 (like me) then this is worth considering. However, standing next to the main Kart game on the format already, it just isn't worth buying.

4.0 out of 5 stars Time to set the record straight!, 27 April 2007

Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
After seeing an advert for the game i knew i had to buy it as i loved it back in the day of Nintendo 64! I was left a little unsure by the previous two reviews but went for it anyway and now feel i should defend it a little! Admittedly it has been made slightly easier than the original and the voices have been changed (including the genie who now sounds a little camp) but it still is good fun and brings back memories! Racing is definately better on mario kart ds but with adventure mode this is a very different game! Recommended for owners of the N64 game...

Fun:3.0 out of 5 stars
My missus bought this game a couple of weeks ago as she fancied a cartoony racing game. She wasn't particularly impressed with it.

I've had a play with it too and if I had played the original on the N64 then I might have pangs of nostalgia which added warmth for the game - but I didn't and was left a little cold by it.

My main gripe with it is that it is too easy. The first time I picked it up I did a quick race, managed to take the lead after a few seconds and got stuck at the side of a tunnel/bridge. I reversed a few times and got myself back on the track - still in 1st! There was no challenge. I got a few boosts and used them to extend my lead. I'm not even that great on racing games usually (I thought I was good on Mario Kart until my mate Marc whipped me into the ground on it!).

There are some good aspects - you can choose to race by road, water, or air - and the little planes are very cute! The power-ups are a bit different to those on other games - and if you collect several of the same colour you can increase the power of your power-up.

But - I felt that I was getting into 1st and not really facing any competition. There's no challenge, it was always going to be tough creating a driving game for a platform where Mario Kart exists (it is absolutely brilliant), and with there being no 'thrill of the chase' in this game, you lose any real passion for it after a few goes.
