Though Hannibal Rising's Lecter (Gaspard Ulliel) is a pussycat compared to Anthony Hopkins in Silence of the Lambs, this sequel's story of revenge is grizzly enough to satisfy lovers of Thomas Harris's epic tale. After young Hannibal (Aaron Thomas) is forced to watch his little sister, Mischa (Helena Lia Tachovska), devoured by starving soldiers in his homeland Lithuania, Hannibal vows to avenge his sister's death by slaying those who committed not only war crimes against the Lecters, but also against other families during WW II.

In detailing Hannibal's revenge plan, the film investigates the psychological implications of witnessing cannibalism to justify Hannibal's insatiable appetite for human flesh. The most interesting aspect of Hannibal Rising--its analytical connections drawn between Hannibal's childhood traumas and his murderous adult obsessions--is also the film's weak point. The links oversimplify Lecter's complex character. For example, though titillating to see flashbacks of Lecter's sister hacked up and boiled while Lecter visits a Parisian meat market, the reference is too obvious. One learns why he excels in his medical school classes dissecting cadavers, and we're given explicit explanation for why he slices off and eats his victims' cheeks. The story only complicates when Hannibal interacts with his sexy Aunt, Lady Murasaki (Gong Li). When Murasaki educates him in the art of beheading, the viewer sees Hannibal's sword fetish as a manifestation of physical lust. --Trinie Dalton

Indeed, director Peter Webber and author Thomas Harris bring us Hannibal Lector (ne: Lecter) the formative years. Off the bat you have to say it's not overtly a horror film, something which has proved to have annoyed many who ventured in expecting something different. Which on one hand is a shame because it's a very effective thriller, ripe with literary smarts and boasting some very good acting performances. While there is horrors around, genuine ones that history has taught us as fact.

On the other hand it is a disappointment to fans of the Hannibal series, and to horror fans in general. The marketing didn't help, it was sold to all and sundry along the lines as the cannibal begins in earnest, thus nobody was quite prepared for the fact Hannibal was a normal kid once, even human! Once the pic kicks into being a revenge killer thriller, it lacks an emotional wallop, with the screenplay shaking too many eggs in the basket and not coming up with a tasty fava bean based omelet.

Smart tech credits help to still further keep this out of stinkerville and above average, but the heavy feeling of missed opportunities and poor writing hangs heavy as the end credits roll. 6/10

If "Silence of the Lambs" was an episode of "Lost", this would be the flashback sequence. While the acting is fine, the script is fine, the production is fine, the sum of the whole simply lacks bite. It's competent, it's okay, it's worth watching. But any film featuring the Hannibal Lecter character is forever in the shadow of the "Lambs", and to date no other Lecter movie has replicated its subtle terror, and indeed Anthony Hopkins almost became his own caricature by the time "Red Dragon" hit the shelves.

This installment does nothing to enhance the franchise, and let's be honest here: if not for the previous movies, this would never have been made - at least not with a cinema release and certainly not as glossy and well-finished.

And this is where it falls down. It's TOO nicely finished, TOO clean. This needed to be gritty and dirty. It reveals too much story too soon, leaving only a single revelation for the denouement. There's too much obvious violence early on, and it soons descends into a pretty average revenge movie.

Yes, an interesting insight into the Lecter character. But thrilling? Nah. (Still better than "Hannibal" though). Oh, and wide open for a sequel / TV series? Yeah, that's right. It is.

I loved this film. Everything about it is amazing to me. To see the troubled past of a young Hannibal Lecter and how he gets his Cannibal tendencies and the way he deals with the ones who started him off this gruesome path. The sound is pretty amazing and I’m very particular about sound especially when it comes to movies. I do wish though it had been given the HD treatment as it would have been awesome then. The picture is nicely graded and adds very well to the style of the film.

Over all a great Bluray. I wish though the white circle stating it to be the uncut version was a sticker and not part of the cover picture.

I've seen all the Hannibal films - a couple of which are pretty iffy - but I was intrigued by the idea of finding out how he became what he was in later depictions. It kicks off when our "hero" is a mere lad at the end of the last war, and, well, goes downhill from there, morally speaking.

I thoroughly enjoyed this film, which was suitably dark as befits the period in general, and the subject and story in particular. You can certainly see why he chose the path he did, and you get to see glimpses of what's to come. A morally nice lad moulded by his circumstances.

This makes a good link to the more famous films, though I cringe a little to think they might be tempted to make a link between this and "Silence of the Lambs" - it'd have to be done very well to get the balance right. For that I rather hope they don't bother.

This film is well worth the small entrance fee, as it fills in a number of gaps - whilst leaving the inevitable questions unanswered.

This is the prequel to the Hannibal films and, as the title suggests, it is about Lecter's boyhood so no Anthony Hopkins. Don't let this put you off. it's equally as good as the others if not better.

The Hannibal franchise has a lot of diversity, after the average remake of the excellent manhunter and the average Hannibal, lector needed to be as frightening as e was in silence of the lamb, this prequel is well made and doesnt dissapoint! Better than the book and better than Hannibal and red dragon wat really makes this film work is the screenplay was written by Thomas Harris it is set during and after the war and Rhys I fans is in excellent form playing the villain, now we have the excellent series on TV it is very interesting to watch this, but Hannibal is he a vigilante or a serial killer? Both!!

Whilst I enjoyed this film as a stand alone film, I found it hard to relate this to the excellent series of Hannibal films to date. Whilst Gaspard Ulliel was convincing in his portrayal of a psycopathic killer evolving into his trade and bent on revenge, imagining him 'rising' into Hopkins's brilliant Hannibal was asking a lot. Beautifully atmospheric and an excellent cast.
