I bought this CD when it came out in February 2007 and seven months later* I am still enjoying listening to it regularly. It was a pleasant musical discovery, and while it is easy on the ear this is not due to any lack of depth to the music, like the greatest British composers Rebecca Clarke understood that musical inventiveness need not be alienating.

Rebecca Clarke was born in 1886 into the exciting world of the British musical renaissance of the late 19th and early 20th century. She was a contemporary of Vaughan Williams, Holst and Bax. The music here shows that she was in no way their inferior. The `Passacaglia on an old English tune' and `I'll bid my heart be still' show that she had the same natural feeling as Ralph Vaughan- Williams for combining folk song and the classic English choral tradition with more recent innovations. She marked out her own musical territory with more exotic musical colourings . In the first work on the disc, the substantial Sonata for Viola and Piano (1919) the rich textures of the Polish Szymanowski and Russian Scriabin are invited into a still distinctly British idiom. The dancing and circling lines of the music have a fluidity that is rarely equalled elsewhere in music of the period. The quality of the music only dips with Chinese Puzzle, a slight piece of mock orientalism a minute and a half long. The disc ends with the rich evocation of the autumnal Prelude, Allegro and Pastoral for Viola and Clarinet.

The musicians: Philip Dukes on Viola, Sophia Rahman on Piano, Daniel Hope on Violin and Robert Plane on Clarinet do a sterling job in taking us deep in Clarke's muse.

I have not used the phrase `underrated female composer' yet, and will not do so again. On this evidence Rebecca Clarke is quite simply one of the best English composers of the early 20th Century.
