4.0 out of 5 stars The Very Best of Saxon, 8 Mar 2007
Long-time fans of Saxon will have all of these on worn vinyl I am sure, but will appreciate the crystal clear sound of the CD. Biff and the boys definitely benefit from the cleaner sound of the digital universe.

Disc 1 is a corker, if you ask anyone with any metal knowledge to name a Saxon song, then 10 out of 10 times they will name '747(strangers in the night)', and here it is in all it's glory, alongside other classics and crowd pleasers like '20,000ft', 'Wheels of Steel' and 'Strong Arm of the Law'.

Disc 2 carries on where Disc 1 left off, with more favourites and the essential live versions of the best of disc 1. 'Dallas 1pm' has a guitar solo that makes grown men weep, and 'Princess of the Night' is guaranteed to give the hairs on the back of your neck a good work out. Disc 2 also has a clutch of tracks from the very underrated 'Power and the Glory' album which are worth a listen.

Disc 3 is a let down. All the stuff on it is competent enough for sure, but it never quite captures the essential edge from the earlier albums. Saying that, it is all worth a listen, and if you are unfamiliar with this era of Saxon's material you will not think any less of the boys for hearing it. The highlight for me is the ridiculous cover of 'Ride Like The Wind' which somehow works, but '747' it isn't.

Buy this album, overall it is very good value, but where is 'Denim and Leather'?.

4.0 out of 5 stars and the band played on, 30 May 2007
By Martin Slater "staggage.co.uk" (Driffield, East Yorkshire) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I recently rediscovered my Saxon collection. Across Vinyl and cassettes and various single etc I have all the stuff on this CD, there are many fine moments indeed but it's 2007 and I haven't got a cassette player in the car anymore so this cheap box set was too good to miss! The track listing on Amazon is wrong but the quality is undisputed. The first Cd covers the 'Saxon' to 'Strong Arm' era including big chunks of all three albums. Wheels of Steel and Strong Arm of the Law being particularly good albums. This is a 5 star CD in itself. The second Cd starts with the rest of the 'Strong Arm' era leading through to 'Power & the Glory' via 'Denim & Leather' and 'The Eagle has Landed' Unfortunately its at this point 1982/3 that things start to go array as Saxon go a bit soft in their approach, presumably for the american market. The third Cd covers 'Crusader' to 'Destiny' a wierd period during which Saxon went all AOR and, probably due to the trend at the time, glammed up their image. Stranger still Paul Quinn got hair after years under a cap ( and now bandana!) - no offense Paul. It's this period which sounds seriously dated now with only a handful of tracks Krakatoa and Red Alert showing glimmers of past highs. In summary though, a corking collection but there is a double CD of Wheels of Steel and Strong Arm of the Law CDs available which may well be a better bet AND get the elusive fifth star.

5.0 out of 5 stars Must buy, 4 Feb 2008
By mike "Mike aging rocker" (Manchester England) - See all my reviews
I have all my Saxon albums on vinyl except Denim and Leather, wish I'd waited for this release. Loved Saxon in the 70's but this still rocks today. What great value for money. If you have not heard of Saxon buy this and if you are into heavy rock/metal you will not be disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic. Brought back some superb memories - then seeing them live in Glasgow was even better.
This is a great album for those who want a snippet of Saxon from years gone by. Having recently seen them in concert in Glasgow (April 2009) I have to admit that they have become... Read more
