Yikes! I've been eagerly awaiting someone to reissue Bobbie Gentry's back catalogue on cd and was thrilled to learn that UK-based Zonophone planned to do the deed. They started with this compilation billed as the Best of the Capitol Years (which is a silly subtitle as she only ever recorded for Capitol, but oh well). It's easy to forgive the titular foolishness, but the mastering on this is another matter. It's an utter mess. The vocals seem to be pushed way to the front and sound harsh; the instrumentation fades into a background mush on subtle tracks such as "Sweet Peony." "Casket Vignette," for example, sounds as if it were mastered from a cassette tape that had been run over by a John Deere tractor. I hope to goodness that they figure out what Bobbie Gentry sounds like before they release the albums!

The rare and unreleased tracks make this a must-own for diehards like me. For neophytes, there are much better Bobbie Gentry comps out there. The organization principle on this is clever (self-penned tunes on disc 1, covers on disc 2), but not especially revelatory or interesting.

Bobbie Gentry is without doubt one of the most underrated female artists in the rock era being one of the true pioneers of the singer-songwriter genre. She only produced a handful of albums in her career spanning the years 1967-71. These have never been re-released bar some recent Australian (and thus expensive) twofers but she has had compilations galore each packaging up a selection of her tracks including the recognised hits together with lesser known items without ever managing to convey the full range of her artistry. The best of an unsatisfactory bunch is probably the Australian Raven compilation, "An American Quilt" which is a 26 track single CD which does an OK job considering the running time limitations but due to its point of origin it is expensive in the UK. The latest compilation is this double disc effort from the UK apparently compiled by Bob Stanley of St. Etienne. The "concept" this time is to have Gentry's self-penned tunes on the first CD and her covers on the second together with a sprinkling of unreleased/rare tracks. This is all well and good but there are problems.... Firstly that CD1 only has 20 tracks coming to 63 minutes running time and Bobbie Gentry wrote and performed many more than 20 tunes, most of which were worthwhile so why not pad out the CD with a few more tracks? Secondly there are tracklisting errors, notably CD1 track 2 listed as "Chickasaw County Child" but is actually "Papa, Won't You Let Me Go To Town With You", a perfectly fine track but so is "Chickasaw County Child" which is totally absent. On the second CD the unreleased tracks, both covers are pretty unremarkable and probably should have stayed unreleased in favour of material from her original discography that is absent from this compilation and the inclusion of two foreign language tracks what was that about (?) certainly not for the pleasure of listeners since they totally disrupt the flow of the album and come across as needless padding. In conclusion a pretty shoddy compilation of a truly innovative, great artist - a great pity and one I'm surprised Bob Stanley was content to put his name to since it certainly besmirches his reputation as an "arbiter of taste" with regards to under represented gems from the '60s and '70s (as evinced by his excellent Glen Campbell compilation), a case of must try harder. Swallow hard and plumb for the more expensive Raven compilation I'd suggest.
