This is an excellent psychological thriller in which Bette Davis plays the part of a nanny in a household where a little girl, one of her charges, drowned in the bathtub and her older brother was blamed, even though he claimed that the nanny did it. After two years time spent in a therapeutic setting, the boy returns home, only to find the despised nanny still there. A cat and mouse game ensues between the two, and when his mother is poisoned, all eyes turn to him, though he once again insists that the nanny did it.
Deftly directed, with a well written, intelligent screenplay by Jimmy Sancster, who also wrote the screenplay for the Bette Davis vehicle, "The Anniversary", this is an engrossing film with a twist at the end that is sure to catch the viewer by surprise. The black and white cinematography adds to the atmosphere of suspense. Bette Davis is first rate as the nanny, and fine performances by the supporting cast contribute to its overall success.
This is a film that fans of Bette Davis are sure to enjoy, as will all those who like well done, psychological thrillers.

So many people associate Wendy Craig with comedy roles only; many are either too young, or simply don't remember that she once played along side such diverse actors and Hollywood Greats as Dirke Bogarde and Bette Davis. In this - probably her greatest movie, she gives an award-winning performance as the neurotic wife of a handsome Queen's Messenger (played by James Villiers) with a disturbed ten-year old son.

This movie could not go wrong with such a strong cast which included so many familiar greats as; Maurice Denham, Pamela Franklin and Jill Bennett to mention just one or two. Each actor gives their best in this gripping thriller from the outset. This movie is not least made so great by no less than three wonderfully talented child stars of the day - a feat that cannot be matched today, partly due to the fact that the age of the traditional child star has long left us... Angharad Aubrey, who plays the little dead girl 'Suzy' in flashbacks is exceptionally talented at such a tender age, but surprisingly is never seen in movies again... Not so surprising I suppose, when one considers that William Dix who plays 'Joey' disappeared just a couple of years later, along with Pamela Franklin who vanished from the silver screen never to return in around 1976!

This movie was difficult to get hold of when on video release, and was only ever done on DVD as a 'double' feature release with 'The Blue Lamp' which was a cheap and nasty way of issuing any Great British classic - until recently that is.

I think the least one is told about this film, the better; the viewer is best kept completely in the dark in order to enjoy it at its best. It's certainly a movie I've savoured in my collection; having viewed it no less now than thirty times to date, and still not tired!

An excellent chiller here from Hammer (1965) crisply shot in black and white, Bette Davis, for once underplays her role as a family Nanny to an affluent London household. With a superb and solid British supporting cast including Wendy Craig and Jill Bennett. Young William Dix plays the 10 year old boy. There will be no spoilers here, however credit has to go to Jill Bennett as 'Aunt Penn' whose acting is excellent and soon discovers 'Nanny' is not all she seems to be...

Chilling and disturbing.

The Nanny is directed by Seth Holt and adapted to screenplay by Jimmy Sangster from the novel of the same name written by Evelyn Piper (AKA: Merriam Modell). It stars Bette Davis, Wendy Craig, William Dix, Jill Bennett, James Villiers and Pamela Franklin. Music is by Richard Rodney Bennett and cinematography by Harry Waxman.

The Fane family, their Nanny, a tragedy and young Master Joey Fane just released from a school for disturbed children. Secrets will out...

A psychological thriller of some substance from Hammer Film Productions, The Nanny thrives on deft story telling and acting of quality from Bette Davis.

There's a slight annoyance that the mystery element of the story struggles to command interest, because the title of the film kind of tells us what is wrong in the Fane household equation, but the constant battle between young Joey (Dix excellent as a kid being stubborn and aggressive, but alienated) and Nanny Bette is riveting.

Holt builds the core of the story patiently, the Fane house is a fraught place, Craig's mom is perched on the edge of a break down, Villiers' papa a stiff backed type not nearly at home enough and emotionally cut off from the worries of his wife and child. Hovering over them all is Nanny, smoothly weaving about them, holding sway with an unnerving calmness, it's a calm before the storm scenario and once the truths come tumbling out the best impact has been garnered due to the unfussy and unhurried work of the production team.

Filmed suitably in black and white and primarily shot in the confines of one home, picture has atmosphere and oppressive feeling in abundance. The lack of that mystery intrigue, and a less than barn storming finale, stop it from being in the top tier of the Hammer-Psycho-Chiller list, but it's easy film to recommend to fans of the genre and especially to fans of the irrepressible Madame Davis. 7.5/10
