Product Description

An enticingly eerie Hammer horror film about a baron in 19th century Austria who keeps his son and daughter virtual prisoners, for he is convinced that insanity runs in his family. Intrigues, chases and murders drive the plot.

Featuring a distinguished cast of great British character actors (and Paul Jones from Manfred Mann), this 1972 film was an attempt by Hammer Studios to move away from the traditional gothic horror of their "Dracula" and "Frankenstein" films and into more "psychological" territory.

This movie shares something in common with the Edgar Allan Poe story "The Fall Of The House Of Usher" with Baron Freidrich Zorn (Robert Hardy) keeping his son and daughter locked up in the family home fearing that they have inherited the family's curse of insanity. Meanwhile, in the nearby village, a mysterious, unknown murderer is killing young girls and then scattering rose petals over their dead bodies....

It soon becomes apparent who the real nutcase is to anyone who watches this movie but "Demons Of The Mind" is still an interesting little film that is well acted throughout. Any film that has the acting powerhouse trio of Michael Hordern, Robert Hardy and Patrick Magee in it has got to be worth a look and the cast also features Shane Briant (who went on to appear in several other Hammer films), Gillian Hills and Virginia Wetherell. Peter Sykes, the director, also directed Hammer's film version of Dennis Wheatley's "To The Devil... A Daughter" which was Hammer's last horror feature film until their recent revival.

This is a pretty unknown Hammer film, and I searched for it for a long time before it was released on DVD (the video was deleted years ago!).

So when it was finally released I was rather excited having heard good things about the film.

The feel of the film is classic old Hammer stuff and the performances, paricularly from the young actors playing Emil and Elizabeth, are pretty good.

Its quite a bleak little film though, without a happy ending but I think the dark story should satisfy horror fans, although I don't think the film would appeal to a particularly wide audience these days.

My only complaint would be that the plot is sometimes confusing, but other than that I highly recommend Demons of the Mind to any serious film fan. You don't get films like this anymore!

An unhinged Baron keeps his children as prisoners in the family mansion for fear they will inherit the family illness - insanity!

It's one of Hammer Films' most divisive productions, some laud it as a Gothic horror with art house veneers, others say it's simply pretentious tripe! The truth is that it's a bold and ambitious picture, a tricky narrative of mental health, incest and brutal patriarch pressure, all cloaked in the Hammer traits so prevalent in their 70s productions.

Cue blood and nudity, hammy acting, good acting, splendid costumes, vivid colour and a mansion setting of some distinction. Unfortunately the story remains too vague for too long, it never settles into a rhythm to unsettle the viewer, while the poor acting from the principals playing the family (Robert Hardy, Shane Briant and Gillian Hills) destracts from what is on paper a fascinating screenplay.

There's something for every horror fan in here, even though it's not explicitly a horror film, so roll the dice and take your chance. I'll sit on the fence like a Swiss politician and rate it 5/10

In this gothic psychological horror, Robert Hardy keeps his incestuous children Shane Briant (in his debut film appearance) and Gillian Hills locked away because they suffer from hereditary insanity whilst girls from the neighbouring areas are being murdered then covered in red flower petals. Are the children really insane? What is the father's role in their insanity. Who is the murderer?

In the early seventies Hammer wished to move away from rather straight gothic horror to films with more psychological themes. 'Bad blood' is a good premise but the film is all rather strange throughout but still highly enjoyable. One asks 'what is going on?' during the first half of the film but personally this was an attraction. Sometimes a pretentious script, Robert Hardy's over-acting, the superfluous appearance of Michael Horden's priest and a bizarre unhappy ending does not ruin the enjoyment.

Being a Shane Briant fan, perhaps I'm a little biased.

Demons of the mind was a different film in comparison to what hammer usually produced and while it is not their best film it certainly isn't their worst. There are no really big names here but there are some familiar faces, patrick magee and shane briant, the acting is good but the first 60 minutes are less than brilliant however it does really liven up towards the end with the last third being far more energetic and enjoyable than the first two and overall this is certainly a worth while purchase for any hammer fan

This should have been a cracking little film. A superb cast, including Michael Hordern, Robert Hardy and Patrick Magee with a potentially interesting story set over 90 minutes looks like a winner from the start. Its not...

Sadly the script lets the whole thing down badly. There are quite a few really clunky lines which made me wince, and the plot whilst initially slightly confusing became entirely predictable as the film went on.

This being made in the early 70's Hammer took the opportunity to take advantage of the more lenient censorship laws and so this does contain nudity and some quite violent scenes. These don't particularly enhance the film, and you'd expect them from a late period Hammer film anyway.

In all honesty as the film got near the end I couldn't wait for it to finish, it had become that irratating. Oh by the way, yes that is the Paul Jones of Manfred Mann and Blues Band fame who plays one of the leading roles.

The only Hammer film I have seen worse than this was Prehistoric Women. My advice don't watch either....
