Product Description

In 1978, the BBC set itself the task of filming all of William Shakespeare's plays for television. The resulting productions, renowned for their loyalty to the text, utilised the best theatrical and television directors and brought highly praised performances from leading contemporary actors - TITUS ANDRONICUS [1985] Having subdued the Goths, conquering hero Titus Andronicus returns to Rome to bury his sons, with Gothic Queen Tamora and her retinue as captives. Titus sacrifices Tamora's eldest son to the gods and helps Saturninus become the the new Roman emperor. Bt when Saturninus chooses Tamora as his wife, an unstoppable wave of bloody revenge is unleashed... Black humour and revenge mark a production where numerous characters face a bloody and horrific death. Shakespeare's revenge tragedy is an intense, primal work with passages of great poetry. As the excesses and ambiguities of family relationships and the abuse of power take hold. Trevor Peacock, in the lead role, delivers a dominating and moving performance.

This, the most gory of all of the Bard's works is such a blood-fest that it isn't for the faint hearted. For anyone with any imagination or the smallest spark of humanity not to be sickened by the portrayal of man at his most bestial ~ It is well spoken, visually arresting it exerts an iron grip on your consciousness and perhaps your dreams . . . Shakespeare's first, most sensation-packed tragedy appeared in print in 1594, and a performance record dating from January of that year appears to indicate that this was then a new play, but according to some sources it had been acted by three companies one of which was bankrupt by the summer of 1593; and the play's style too, suggests that it was written earlier.

The BBC’s "Shakespeare Collection” Titus Andronicus is among the stodgiest of the set - and that's saying something. It struck me as heavy and slow-moving, and the sets are lame, even by the standards of this set. The casting is questionable; Trevor Peacock is at his most gravelly ludicrous, and the Aaron is way too tame. Many of the speeches lack all emotion, and the whole burlesque element that is brought out so well in most productions is completely ignored here, though it could be argued that this is a valid interpretative choice.

In fairness, and in spite of the foregoing, it should be added that some of the key scenes were quite well done; the ending is particularly well handled, and it shows why such revenge plays, and this one in particular, were so popular in Shakespeare’s day. Overall, however, I wouldn’t want to have to sit through this one again. Your best choice is probably the Globe's film, though Julie Taymor's is also worthwhile.

Do you find Shakespeare dull?
Well, try this for size. A play full of back stabbing murderers, plot twists aplenty, and quite a bit of blood!
All fake of course.
Well acted and the ending wont surprise you too much. There are shades of other Shakespearian plays through out if you are watching closey.
Not a film for a quite night in with a box of hankies.
You have been warned!
