Well where should I start?
This film rates as one of my all time favourites. For the past thirteen or so years I have played this over and over again.... and that's not just at Christmas time. Thank goodness the DVD has finally come out on sale cos my video of it has seen better days.
The film still leaves my brother and I in stitches even though we know it word for word. Clarke Griswold just wants to fulfil his ambition of a 'Big Ole Fashioned Family Christmas' but for one reason or another, things just don't seem to go Clarke's way. Full of hilarious one-liners, and plenty of wacky scenes, this film will have you splitting your sides. Watch out for the 15,000 twinkle lights Clarke attempts to put onto the house - you'll be crying from laughter. Well, for my money he's added to my Christmas' in a big way and given me hours and hours of enjoyment. A classic for every household.

I discovered this film by accident a few years ago (recorded from satellite in error) but it had me and my family in stitches ... it's now a family tradition that we watch it a few times over the Christmas holidays - and we all still laugh out loud. Many 'laugh out loud' bits - but the 'Choosing the Christmas Tree, putting up the Christmas lights, the Squirrel incident, the loft scene, the lingerie shopping trip and the chainsaw scene' are particularly good ... but really the film is funny from start to finish...

There are a couple of more modern Christmas classics I had never seen, and I decided this was the year to fix that. After all, everyone always references them, so I should know what they are all about. Up first was National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation. It had its moments, but overall, I was okay not having seen this one.

The story follows the adventures of the Griswold family. Instead of going somewhere for the holiday, they are hosting Christmas for their extended family, and Clark (Chevy Chase) wants to make sure it is the best Christmas ever. He’s got big plans for his Christmas bonus as a surprise Christmas present he’s even keeping from his wife Ellen (Beverly D’Angelo). And he is going to include his family in all the traditions whether kids Audrey (Juliette Lewis) and Rusty (Johnny Galecki) want it. That includes getting the Christmas tree and putting a ton of lights on the house. But as the family staying in the house grows, will anyone really have the Christmas spirit?

The movie just didn’t quite work for me, and I’m not completely sure why. Several of the scenes are funny in their own right, but I think it was the combination as bad thing after bad thing kept happening that overwhelmed me. Plus we were supposed to be laughing at poor Clark as he kept trying but making a fool out of himself. As I said, not too horrible, but definitely not my first choice for humor.

Then there were the scenes that did bother me as Clark was drooling over a very attractive woman or got into a war of words with his neighbors. Not at all funny but very crude and just wrong.

The cast is all definitely great in their parts.

All too often, I have found the words "National Lampoon's" to be synonymous with "not funny," but National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation is actually a pretty entertaining film. Christmas at the Griswold's turns out just like you would expect it to, with Clark (Chevy Chase) trying to persevere in the face of one disaster after another. With the whole family coming over, he wants everything to be perfect - from the Christmas tree he finds and cuts down (er, digs up) himself to the thousands of lights he staples all over the house. He's not completely stupid, though - he knows his parents and his wife's parents are going to argue throughout the holidays, that his wife and kids aren't all that excited about sharing Christmas with the rest of the family, and that Aunt Bethany couldn't get back in the loop even if she knew where to find it, but he's determined to make this the best Christmas ever.

Of course, there are a few things Clarke wasn't counting on: countless problems getting all the decorations up and working, the unexpected arrival of cousin Eddie (Randy Quaid) and his backwater brood in their junky RV, or the unwelcome visits of the aptly-named Snots the dog and a special Christmas squirrel. Then, of course, there's the cat-related tragedy, the Christmas bonus bugaboo, and that whole police raid.

The filmmakers brought together a really good cast for this film. Beverly D'Angelo is Clarke's perfectly understanding wife, while Johnny Galecki and a young Juliette Lewis play the long-suffering Griswold kids. The in-laws include Doris Roberts and E.G. Marshall, while Randy Quaid is perfectly cast as crude cousin Eddie.

This movie is one of Chevy Chase's best!! Here he is planning the ultimate family christmas, and of course it doesn't go as planed! The opening scene is just faboulus...where the family is out looking for the perfect christmas tree.... Also they encounter the struggle of putting up christmas lights outside, and of course the unexpected christmas guests.
The movie is REALLY funny, but it also gives you the warm fuzzy feelings of family being together at the hollidays. This is a holliday-must in our family....we watch it EVERY year before christmas. Perfect for kids and grown-ups!!!
