Amazon.co.uk Review

Cary Grant is the befuddled English earl casually puttering around his tourist attraction of a grand old estate in casual dress while a bull of an American millionaire (Robert Mitchum) crashes into his life and seduces Grant's sophisticated lady (Deborah Kerr). It's pure fantasy, of course, with its cool, cultured lovers swapping witty banter with the same calm they swap gunshots in an old-fashioned duel. Have adultery and jealousy ever been so civilised? Stanley Donen never shakes this very British drawing-room comedy of manners free of its talky, stagebound source or its deliberate snail's pace, but he does manages to bring a lightness that softens the wit with an American lilt. Ultimately, though, it's all about a crack cast in fine form: Mitchum's sleepy-eyed insolence, Kerr's easy elegance, Jean Simmons's flighty outrageousness, and especially the charm and measured grace that is Cary Grant. --Sean Axmaker

Synopsis

When American millionaire Charles Delacro (Robert Mitchum) stumbles into the private quarters of Victor (Cary Grant) and Hilary (Deborah Kerr), an English aristocratic couple who allow public tours through their stately mansion, he brings a whirlwind of trouble with him. Hilary's dissatisfaction with her staid life plus verbal sparring with Charles about Anglo-American differences spark a romance between the two, easily perceived by Hilary's husband, Victor. When Hilary goes to London to meet Charles secretly, an old flame of Victor's visits to give him advice on his disintegrating marriage and to perhaps seduce him too. Victor's solution? Invite his wife's lover up for the weekend to engage in some fishing and a duel. Woven together with a wide streak of humour is a wonderful, surprisingly rich and blunt scrutiny of marital troubles and endurance.

2.0 out of 5 stars Sound quality, 24 Jun 2007
After watching the film on TV and owning the video, I was disappointed at the sound quality of this DVD. Cary Grant simply does not sound like Cary Grant, but a very bad actor voice over. Being a great fan of Cary Grant I could not watch this movie more than 15 minutes because of the sound. Thankfully I have retained the VHS.

3.0 out of 5 stars Sophisticated entertainment but a lousy DVD transfer, 2 Nov 2007
By Mad about Movies (England, UK) - See all my reviews
I adore the cast of this film, all of them genuinely seemed to be enjoying themselves during the filming of it. Jean Simmons in particular was a delight, playing a London based society girl. Her character brings out the best in her, as a comedienne, and it's a wonderfully amusing and effervescent performance.

The DVD though is a disappointment. It's presented in it's correct aspect ratio, but is not 16.9 enhanced, which therefore doesn't bring out the best quality ... in short, the transfer is awfully soft, especially in the long shots. Universal have proved before that they can do better than this, so I hope we see a better DVD print of this film, someday.

3.0 out of 5 stars Grass still green, 30 May 2009
By Theatre Buff (Maidenhead, UK) - See all my reviews
Having seen the play "The grass is greener" at the Windsor Theatre and particularly enjoyed the dialogue I was interested to see what sort of job Hollywood made of it. I was pleasantly entertained especially by Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr and delighted by the script which obviously kept closely to the original as it was by Hugh Williams. Of course I never would have bought the DVD if I hadn't seen the play!
