Synopsis

Based on William Somerset Maugham's novel, THE RAZOR'S EDGE follows a young man's search for identity. After experiencing WWI, veteran Larry Darrell (Bill Murray) seeks spiritual peace and recovery. After leaving his fiancee (Catherine Hicks), he travels to war-torn Europe and finally to the mystic Himalayas, where he eventually finds what he's looking for in manual labour and the wisdom of an Indian guru. However, Larry realises that he can no longer resume the life he left behind, and that he must end his relationship with his fiancee if he is to reach his goal. But he finds love with another woman (Theresa Russell), and she causes new trouble for Larry. A labour of love for Murray, he wrote the script with director John Byrum and demonstrates previously unseen dramatic strength.

5.0 out of 5 stars watch without prejudice, 21 Aug 2007
By Michael Owen "oz" (Brighton, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I think the 1984 film is a beautiful piece of work. I once bought a multi-region DVD player just to play it as it was not available in region 2. And I love rainy Sunday afternoons as they give me the perfect excuse to sit and watch it again.

The negative and worse (indifferent) response that the film got from both critics and public has always puzzled and saddened me. That Bill Murray, John Byrum, Theresa Russell, Denholm Elliot and the rest are not now bitter and twisted depressives is a testament to human endurance. I only hope that they have profound satisfaction in the quality of their work and comfort in the knowledge that it is still out there being rediscovered and perhaps reappraised. I hope that Bill Murray was as well equipped to deal with it as his character became.

This is a film that could so easily have shot right up it's own poop chute - and I imagine it would if were remade again. It contains emotions that match the thematic range of high mountains to deep mines. It is sad but uplifting. And all this without the merest whiff of sentimentality or schmaltz. And Bill Murray's Larry is a strong charismatic and sympathetic central character. I can only put the negative manner by which the portrayal was received down to - well.. old fashioned prejudice (the inability to see beyond a narrow preconceived opinion of someone). Lets hope that new generations can appraise the film without prejudice and perhaps save it from obscurity.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hold the coin in your hand..., 15 Jun 2008

This was an astonishingly brave move on Bill Murray's part over twenty years ago; a comedian redefined as a serious actor, or merely a fine actor possessed of great range and proving it?

I'll leave you to work than one out for yourself, but for me this is a beautiful, haunting and finally uplifting film, and a lot of that has to do with Murray's performance and an intriguing script (also co-written by Murray) reworked from Somerset-Maugham's novel.

For those of you who thought Bill Murray only acted `serious' with `Lost In Translation', and better yet enjoyed it, then I recommend that you at least rent this wonderful film.

5.0 out of 5 stars great film of a great novel, 18 Mar 2009
By mc (glasgow) - See all my reviews
It would always be a difficult job making a brilliant novel into a brilliant film, and I applaud Bill Murray for his courage. Perhaps not a classic film - I always had a very different "picture" of Larry in my head - but a brave and intelligent one which deserves to be watched, digested and watched again. Excellent performances from all concerned, and not just for fans of Somerset Maugham. Hence the 5 stars.
