Leopold Stokowski was born in Britain but made his name in America where he conducted many of the greatest orchestras. He was a master conductor and produced a glorious sound from even second-rate ensembles. It is good to see his stature being recognised after years when he was dismissed prematurely and unjustly. Though this is not the greatest recording of this symphony, for it is somewhat slow in pace - he seems to think Beethoven went for a dander rather than a walk - it is well worth having. Though the sound is mono, it is warm with at times a real bloom on the instruments. Part of the delight of this CD is a talk given by Stokowski himself about Beethoven and the sounds of nature, where the natural sounds are set against Beethoven's musical portrayal of them. It is not a divine revelation, nor even that of a minor deity, but the delight is to hear Stokowski himself. You'd never imagne he was brought up in London! If you want only one CD of this music, then this is not the one to choose but if you want to have a good example of this great conductor's work, this might tempt you. Thanks to Cala Records who are championing his work.
