I can thoroughly recommend this recording as an excellent introduction to this much maligned composer. He wrote music that he liked to listen to and I think you should accept it as such. Yes, there is a 'filmy' atmoshere to it but it is well worth a listen, particularly if you enjoy a brassy sound from a big orchestra. Khimrian Hairig is very calm and soothing, but the guitar concerto and symphony are both tuneful and expansive.

This composer has been roundly scorned for his facile approach to symphonic form, repetitiveness and sheer fecundity (67 symphonies, over 440 opus numbers!). As Dorothy Parker said, this can be seen as the first rate giving way to the fecund rate! Add to this his own assessment of his music as "not for snobs, but for all people" as the liner notes tell us here, and one can well imagine why he is looked down on by the cognoscenti. This is unfair in my view. It may not be tightly-argued symphonic thinking in the true sense but No. 60 here is well orchestrated, tuneful, 'mystical' stuff - a symphony for the hippies, perhaps. But it's none the worse for that. There is much that is refreshing and enjoyable here. The Guitar Concerto is long-winded at 31 mins but is light and whimsical. The performances are good and the recording has breath and light - perfectly apt for this music. Give it a go and see for yourself.
