5.0 out of 5 stars Escape?!!!, 14 Mar 2007
By D. Ludwig "dml17" (uk) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
For days now I've been wondering how to write this review to emphasize this albums brilliance so bare with me! The only criticism is that Track 2 (Catastrophe) should have started the album off on a smooth course then, bang!, straight into the stonking Take This Heart which moves seductively onto the hypnotic 'Lennonesque' Sound And The Fury, then takes you back to a rumbling rock track (Day Is A Downer), then flows into the Kinks/Small Faces/Monkeys sounding Mother's Dilema, and dare I say it a U2 sounding Have Pity, I could go on and on but I hope anyone who reads this and likes the sixties and early seventies sound will get my drift!! The brilliance of this album is the simplicity of it, yes there are lots of guitars, yes there are changes in rifts and keys all over the place, but the way the thieves carry it off so simply as if it comes naturally is a testament to their musical ability. I have never heard an album that literally takes me back to the sixties era so genuinely! I have had the privilage to hear Ian Armstrong's Greatest White Liar and raved about that record, this one is even better. Sadly, I feel that this album will be missed because of all the other Indie/Rock bands out there who's record companies invest so much in, which is a damn shame. It's took me four or five listens to get into it but once you start appreciating this record you won't want to Escape!!!!

1.0 out of 5 stars Very disappointing! Boring indie-rock by numbers - A waste of a very special talent!, 1 Nov 2007
By R. A. Ash "louie_strychnine" (Bristol, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This is the extremely disappointing follow up to Nic Armstrong's The Greatest White Liar album, an album which is one of my favourite records of recent years. The Greatest White Liar was influenced by the British RnB sound of the 1960s (Animals, Kinks, early Beatles) and managed to sound neither hackneyed or boring.

Between releasing that record and this one Nic Armstrong and his band toured America with Oasis and god does it show! Whereas Liam Watson of Toerag fame did a brilliant job on the 1st album the songs here sound turgid and humourless, I'll wager that this is maybe because the record was produced with an eye on breaking America or appealing to the lumpen thugs who now constitute the Oasis fanbase.

This album takes its title from a stop-gap single released between the albums and it is one of the best things Nic Armstrong did. You won't find If We Can Escape My Pretty on this album as it came out as a gig-only siongle but I think you can get it on the re-released and US version of the Greatest White Liar - I urge you to get that album and forget about this one - there's a reason why 38 people are selling it for less than 0.99p!
