Product Description

This compelling and stylish noir thriller is based on one of the most notorious French political scandals of the 60s - the disappearance of the prominent Moroccan dissident Mehdi Ben Barka. In a Paris apartment in 1965, police discover the body of ex-con George Figon. A year earlier, tired of dodgy deals and petty scams, Figon had gone in search of something big. Through his underworld connections he had got himself hired as a producer for a documentary on decolonisation written by Marguerite Duras and directed by Georges Franju, with Ben Barka as 'historical advisor'. But when Figon set up a meeting with Barka in Paris, the whole film project was revealed to be an elaborate trap

Synopsis

Intrigue and suspense ensue in this political thriller that focuses on George Figon, a recent parolee with big aspirations. The scene is set when police discover Figon's body in an apartment, but how did he happen to die there? Figon it is revealed had sought to get himself hired as a producer on a documentary. Having found a way into the production through the use of a criminal network, it is revealed that he'll be working alongside Moroccan dissident Medhi Ben Barka, who has been hired as a 'historical advisor'. After arranging a meeting with Ben Barka in Paris, it rapidly becomes evident that the whole project is nothing more than an elaborate trap and that his life is in serious danger.

4.0 out of 5 stars Disquieting political drama, 24 May 2007
By H. A. James "Hywel James" (Devon, United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Charles Berling's performance as Georges Figon is outstanding and shows a twitchy, nerve-wracked, delusional chancer who becomes fatally drawn into an assassination conspiracy. Jean-Pierre Leaud as the film director, Georges Franju, withered as an old fig, is also admirable. Indeed, all the principal actors work well together and provide a strength which does much to hold together a movie that sometimes trips itself up by attempting to offer too many layers of a story simultaneously. However the appearance of Paris in the mid-1960's is effectively evoked, as are its political tensions, and the whole is underpinned by a very good jazz score.

1.0 out of 5 stars Confusing plot, 25 Feb 2008
By Brendan O. Clarke "brendoclarke" (Edinburgh) - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
This political thriller (French) recalls the true story of Georges Figon, a French movie producer who witnesses the assassination of Moroccan Ben Barka by French secret Service.
I know this because I read it on the back of the dvd box in my local dvd library (VOGUE VIDEO Edinburgh dvds are £1.50 per night). The front of the dvd box is cluttered with 5* reviews from well established movie magazines.
However I found myself completely lost in this movie as I do not have a degree in Franco-Moroccan political history. I had absolutely no idea what was going on in the labyrinth plot; the director foolishly decided to use a Rashomon-style triple narrative to recall main events. This lack of contextual explanation meant I knew or cared why the films events took place.
Avoid.

4.0 out of 5 stars A 60s conspiracy thriller, 1 Jun 2009
It's hardly Costas-Gavras,but we are in politcal thriller country,It's not big budget enough to be JFK,yet we are in conspiracy theory territory.I liked the background newsreel research setting the context of those heady far off 60s years, with shots of Che and Castroetc.,representatives of the wronged Third World. Haneke started the ball rolling in a more complex mystery thriller. The subject matter there was more integrated into the story line. Here the drama of the ex-con wheeler-dealer producer doesn't quite match. Who killed Ben Barka? Was it the CIA,De Gaulle's agents or the Moroccon secret services.Or were they all in cahoots? The chief actors were good, the subject matter was worthy but if you look at 'Days of Glory' you get the message more because the characters are believable creations in a well-plotted drama, they are not suppositious entities moving like shadows in possible reconstructions, although we do know Ben Barka did exist and his disappearance has never been explained.Worth a view.
