Toscanini called her "the Voice of an Angel" and on these wonderful CDs Renata Tebaldi fully lives up to her reputation as the greatest lyrico-spinto soprano of the 20th century. Her voice is full, rich, even and she pours out glorious tone in phrase after phrase. And what an imaginative singer she was - colouring the tone to express the dramatic situation. It was always a mature sounding voice and in her later years the voice lost range and brightness - but the compensation was a glorious, warm sound in the middle range with absolutely no sign of loosening vibrato. Although Tebaldi's live recordings can be dramatically more enthralling (she always said she was a little tentative in the studio)these studio recordings are invaluable. Sound is excellent and well up to Decca's high standards of the day - although a poor edit in one of the Verdi tracks means a phrase is repeated. Unfortunately, as with other sets in this series, there are no texts or translations - a severe disadvantage for those who don't know their operas. But for lovers of good operatic singing, it just doesn't come any better than this. Buy the set - and enjoy!
