Synopsis
Kindly caretaker Cleveland Heep (Paul Giamatti, SIDEWAYS) discovers an elfin creature named Story (Bryce Dallas Howard, THE VILLAGE) living in the swimming pool of the apartment complex where he works. It soon becomes apparent to Cleveland that Story is not of this world, and that her mission to deliver a message to mankind is fraught with danger. The stuttering caretaker tries valiantly to protect her so that she may have safe passage back to the Blue World from whence she came. Suspension of disbelief is mandatory in this beautifully realised modern day fable, directed by master of suspense M. Night Shyamalan, who puts his own unique spin on the conventions of the traditional fairy tale.

4.0 out of 5 stars Its okay!, 10 Dec 2006

I am a huge fan of the other films - the Sixth sense, Signs, Unbreakable, the Vlllage and although this latest film isnt in the same league its ok. There are some problems with the film, e.g. that the narration relies too heavily on a Korean family and the director perhaps gave himself too bigger a role but there are some great moments and fine performances.

Its definitly one where you have to suspend disbelief and dont over analyse, because it wont get you anywhere. I believe the director created this story as bedtime story for his family. Its a modern fairy tale. Watch and make your own mind up. I liked it

5.0 out of 5 stars If you like feel good fantasy films..., 6 Feb 2007

... then this is for you.

If you like films with lots of special effects, twists or an intricate plot then this isn't for you.

It's essentially a tale about different querky personalities living in an appartment block who must all work together to return a water spirit to her home. (Yes - you will need to suspend your belief while watching the film but the director makes it easy for you to do this.) I thought the character development of the bit part characters was done well given the short space of time the director had with the multiple characters.

I really liked it but can understand some of the negative comments that it has attracted as this isn't a film that you get nowadays - a simple plot elegantly told on screen that draws you in and leaves you with a simple feeling of satisfaction having watched it.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best film of 2006!!!, 27 Dec 2006
Although receiving very mixed reviews upon its initial release to the cinemas I think this is a really good film. Simple as that. It has it all: a good doze of fantasy, great story telling technique, fantastic characters, some very comic and hilarious scenes, and it also teaches us a lesson about life at a deeper level. I wasn't sure what to expect from this film when I first saw it but I was pleasantly surprised. Sadly it never got the praise I feel it deserves in the media. A film I am certainly looking forward to seeing again when it gets released on DVD.

5.0 out of 5 stars Its great!!
When I first heard of this film I was really excited, but for all the wrong reasons. They marketed it as a bit of a horror film, which is wrong. This is not a horror film. Read more
