Album Description
For more than twelve years, Abbie de Quant has organized her own series of concerts in the Small Auditorium at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. Typically each programme contains at least one new composition especially written for her. Her repertoire spans from the Baroque to contemporary Western and Asian music. This has resulted in very diverse performances in which she has regularly crossed the borders of her own areas of profession. She has worked with many great conductors and musicians, including Neville Marriner, Luciano Berio, Ton Koopman, David Zinman and Raymond Leppard, and has recorded for such labels as EMI, Sony and Etcetera.
The idea of putting together a programme in homage to Francis Poulenc came out of her long-standing regard for the composer's flute music, specifically his "Sonata for Flute and Piano" which is featured on the disc. Several of the composers' whose music make up this intriguing collection were friends and contemporaries of Poulenc.
Arthur Honegger and Germaine Tailleferre, along with Poulenc himself, made up three of the group called "Les Six", which was hugely important in the French music scene of the 20th century. Others were either influential in Poulenc's development, (Charles Koechlin was his teacher), or, as in the case of the two Dutch composers Jan Bus and Bart Visman, have been greatly inspired by his music.
