Some people are too picky, 12 Jun 2007
Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
Just don't understand some people. This game is excellent.
Fantastic graphics. Superb game play and the in game animations are there just to give you a sense of story line.
At least you don't have to start right from the begining again if you die. And the Bosses are awsome if a little frustrating to kill.
Overall I feel my money was well spent on this game and I have had hours and hours of game play and I'm only on mission 6.
It's coming down in price now and you would be crazy not to have this game in your collection.

really rather fun, 21 Jan 2007
Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
Im about 8 out of 12 levels in now and I must say that this is rather good but not fantastic
story 6/10
So we're terrafoming a new planet to sustain human life- some indegineous creatures (akrid) arnt very happy about it and have proceeded to murder your dad. revenge is in the air... Thats right this is Starship Troopers with snowstorms. The lacklustre story unfolds with a cutscene at the end (and sometimes middle) of each level and in all fairness theyre complete drivle- Amnesia- government conspiracy- there's nothing new here. dont expect to be drawn in by the strory and i would be surprised if you grew any affinity to the chracters.
gameplay 7/10
the game is played from a third person perspective and I must say that its a very well thought out control system which follows the easy to learn/ difficult to master theme. You wont be pressing the wrong buttons at crucial moments and bemoaning your clumsy thumbs.
Its worth baring in mind that this is an arcade style shooter so fans of tactical espionage may be dissappointed- you will have your right index finger glued down on the trigger for large periods and at times you will feel that success is down to luck rather than skill.
Success through levels is often dependent upon your utilisation of VS Suits. These are large mechanoid type walkers with which you can strap large weapons - gattling guns, rocket launchers, laser weapons, shotguns etc. There's nice variation here- some are quick and nimble some slow and powerful and you'll need to think about which weapons to strap to it to best suit the situation. It is very good fun throughout and you'll never feel bored. Challenging without being frustrating.
On the negative side it is extremely linear. There are no alternative routes through levels to aid replay value. Its such an old fashioned style game as well. level based with a boss at the end. I found it frustrating that there are no in-level save points. Each level can take up to an hour to play through, which is about right but i found that i often got stuck on the boss battle at the end but was unable to end my game without having to play through the level again - very frustrating! Also you can quite easily run past most of your enemies and are not forced to fight so you might find yourself asking 'why bother'
graphics 9.5/10
The only reason I dont give it 10 is because its not as good as Gears of War, which is still easily the best. Absolutely superb explosions and snow effects. There's a great variety of environments and scenery, textures and colours and some of the akrid are mamoth and awe inspiring. Truly superb in every sense. Its just a shame that this isnt more of a sandbox type of game so that you could explore more. A slight niggle is that your ever diminishing thermal life bar often means that you cant hang around to admire the view.
sound 9/10
Cant fault the sound either really. The screams and roars of the akrid are perfect and apporiate to the particular cretures size and type. voice acting is more than adequate (even if the hero is a bit to pretty for my liking) missiles fly past your ears and bullets reverberate on your surroundings. theres good echo in indoor environments and it all has a good feel of authenticity.
overall 7.5/10
Ive never been a big fan of arcade shooters. They seem to me a relic of 90's 8-bit consoles but there was enough here to persuade me otherwise.

Not quite Gears Of War, but a still a gooden!, 4 April 2007
Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
Game develpers Capcom have had a rather excitable 12 months, having released such highly anticipated games like Dead Rising and Lost Planet in such a short space of time. To sum it up, Lost Planet is about one man's fight to regain lost memory about his past, while battling for survival on a snow covered planet against the mighty Akrid aliens and enemy snow pirates.
As many reviewers before me have mentioned, this game is a real treat for the eyes, this game displays over 30 000 differnet shades of blue for example! But before i start to talk about the in game content, id like to point out that to compare any aspect of this game to Gears Of War is unfair to the game, if we all compared games to Gears Of War, we'd never find a game we could enjoy! No, this game is no gears of war and nor does it try to be one.
There are plenty of shooters out there today, but none quite like lost planet. From the moment you start to play, you can immediatly tell that the game was made by a Japanese company as there is an overwhelming feeling of an arcade like presence through every stage of this game. Just the way this game plays out, its just so... retro... and i love it!
The single player is fairly straight forward if repetative and can sometimes leave you thinking, "Is that it?!" However in the long run, the game delivers as spreaded around all 12 single player missions is absoulute mayhem, with the player facing loads of on screen enemies. The AI on this game coupled with the raw power of the xbox 360 can produce outstanding amounts of detail on every enemy, with up to 1000 moving parts on one screen at the same time... WITHOUT A DOSE OF LAG! Trust me, killing loads of Akrids on the surface and then falling through the snow to be greeted with 50 more gives you an riviting buzz. Producers Capcom make the player feel that the odds are stacked impossibly against him, and boy does it feel good when your kicking ass on this game.
This is a hard game, and is tough to finish, but is made easier with the assistance of the magnificent "Vital suits" or VSes. A VS is a manually operated walking, jumping heap of hard hitting metal that can be used both in single player and multiplayerto eradicate enemies with an outstading array or huge mech weapons. These include a gatling gun, a high powered mage shotgun, laser guns, homing missile launchers, gargantuan rocket launchers and more. Better yet, these weapons can be ripped of off a VS and used by a man, or installed on another VS, allowing the player to create his own brand of mechanised mayhem.
These days, the multiplayer modes make up half of the gaming experiance, and lost planet delivers in this aspect. Up to sixteen player can battle it out in four different game types on over 8 huge maps. These maps are up to 10x bigger than enything youd see in GoW's multiplayer and the maps are constanly bombarded with real time weather changes and even day and night. Sniping? your vision will soon be impared by a thick blizzard raging through the map, using a snow storm as cover to sneak up on the enemy base? Better act fast or the storm will end and your cover will be blown! You can even use your uniqe breathing mask to launch attcks from under water! Or you can simply wait until night time, so you can make your move under the cover of darkness!
Overall, this game is a barrel of fun and although it can get a little repetative and the voice acting is far from great, this is over-compensated by feriously fun gameplay and unpredictable mayhem!
Graphics: 9/10-Fantastic but the odd niggly spot, though!
Gameplay: 8/10-Fun but a little repetative
Controls: 7/10-clunky and confusing in points
Length: 8/10-12 medium-long missions
Online: 9/10-A great laff for you and your mates
Overall: 9/10-Flawed in places but a job well done for Capcom! (applause!)
