    5.0 out of 5 stars Flexibility has a price, 1 Jan 2008
By Andrew Hingston (York, UK) - See all my reviews

I've used Personal Accountz for a year, and MS Money before that, and am in no doubt which I prefer. Accountz is quicker to use, and customised to fit my needs. The downside is that you have to think things out for yourself; instead of being presented with a standard template it is up to the user to decide how much detail they want. Is the most that you can realistically manage a simple breakdown of outgoings into cash, credit cards, mortgage, utilities, etc? That's fine, but if you also want to record and analyse exactly how much you and your partner are each spending on, say, alcohol, and where, you can easily include that level of detail without committing yourself to doing so for every other expenditure. If you want to be able to produce reports by payee then you can enter the payee's name; it is unlikely you will want to do so for every domestic transaction and you save enormous amounts of effort by skipping that column. If you want to be able to tell what you are spending your credit cards on then you will need to enter each transaction and allocate it to an expenditure category. The reporting function is a powerful one but depends on the variables having been input in the first place. What may have confused some reviewers is that the programme won't constantly prompt for input because it assumes that the user is omitting it by design.
It does mean investing time in deciding what you want, setting it up and understanding how the programme works, and though I haven't resorted to the support desk the help file could be better. It is not a programme for people who have no idea how to structure home accounts.

2.0 out of 5 stars Only for very basic use, 15 April 2007
By A. P. Lawrence (Warwickshire, UK) - See all my reviews

If you are starting out tracking your basic spending/current account usage for the first time then this product may be OK. If you are used to either Quicken/MS money before then you be disappointed.

The documentation says that the developers have concentrated on keeping the interface simple but a consequence is that the functionality of Accountz is very, very basic.

One example - automated entries - you can't create them from an existing transaction. You can't set an entry to be prompted to enter the value - important if you have something that changes each month (Credit card anyone). You can't record an entry in advance once you know that amount and the date it will leave your account. This can be fudged but software is meant to help you rather than hinder you?

There is no sensible way to record share/unit trust investments, loans, assets etc. Fudges are suggested but the product is clearly not designed for nothing more than current accounts.

A final insult - forget being able to migrate from other packages - the converter simply couldn't cope with my Quicken export - it only found one account.

I have used Quicken for many years and bought this as I am in the middle of moving from Windows to a MAC environment and this runs on both. This product simply isn't good enough to manage my accounts - it is little more than a glorified spreadsheet.

5.0 out of 5 stars UK Based Personal Finance - Get your Money in order, 13 Feb 2007
By Glen Allan (Renfrewshire, Scotland) - See all my reviews
    (REAL NAME)
I really like this software because it does exactly what a finance package should do - allows you to track your spending against your income.

It does not need a new PC to run on and will operate on a relatively low spec pc.

Very simple interface with a really good and straitforward manual to walk you through the application.

Good online support forum and regularly released updates improving the software from users feedback (yes that is correct, this UK company actually listens to what its' customers want - will wonders never cease)

The software is made in the UK and can tie into UK online bank systems statements for account reconciling (checking)

It allows forecasting and constant tracking against budget thresholds.

Highly recommended if you want a UK Financial software application that does what it says on the tin.

I would recommend buying it from Amazon as you will save £10 on the normal retail price.

P.S. I know MS Money and Intuit are out there, but they are aimed squarely at the US Market (couldn't care less about UK banking conventions)or UK users, hence why I recommend this piece of UK based software.

Hope this helps you to save some money.

    All the best
