3.0 out of 5 stars Not the best option, 8 Aug 2009

Marx Brothers Boxset: A Girl in Every Port/The Cocoanuts/Love Happy/Room Service/Animal Crackers/Monkey Business/Horse Feathers/Duck Soup [DVD]

I'm sure I'm stating the obvious here, but it's actually cheaper to buy the 8-movie box set which includes these 4 films plus Duck Soup, Horse Feathers, Animal Crackers and Monkey Business. (I wanted to complete my collection and ended up having to buy those 4 films for a second time - grr!)

3.0 out of 5 stars A nice boxed set if you want to complete the collection, 12 Jul 2009
By Roger (Colchester) - See all my reviews
It's probably best to assume you know what you'll be getting if you are contemplating buying a Marx Brothers boxed set, so there is little point in discussing the humour. Whether or not you should buy this particular set if perhaps more to the point.

This is a rather unusual collection, being as much of `historical' interest as anything. The only `truly typical' film is Room Service, which has all the characteristics of the famous Marx Bros films; you will find variations on all the familiar routines, some great slapstick sequences and polished delivery of gags timed to perfection. The Cocoanuts was their very first film, being a filmed version of their Broadway stage show, as much musical as anything (remember, their famous early films were not overloaded with music and dance routines - that happened later to give their films more `family' appeal). It even looks stagy and not all the familiar characteristics are yet in place (like Groucho's walk for instance) but there are still some great gags and you can see how the act would develop into the classic performances to come. But it still looks very dated.

Love Happy does feature all three brothers, but it is essentially a vehicle for Harpo, who gets a rare chance to indulge in a romance. Groucho appears only briefly and Chico seems present mainly for support. True, Harpo does carry his role well, and does have his slapstick moments, and the whole things is quite `sweet' to watch, but is not a typical Marx Brothers film. A Girl in Every Port has only Groucho performing, a typical `Groucho' character but not quite as lunatic as usual. Again, it has its moments of humour, and a few good one-liners, but there is no real suitable foil for Groucho.

So, you'll get what you expect with Room Service, but the others are more for interest and their significance. They are certainly worth watching once but you probably won't be in a hurry to view them again. Still, a nice boxed set if you want to complete the collection.
