2.0 out of 5 stars A better remastering of a possible reconstructed copy, 18 July 2009
By Archaeologist (Los Angeles, CA) - See all my reviews
Usually NAXOS does a very good job in remastering historical recordings. This cd is not exception. Sound quality is excellent, but this is a better remastering of the EMI cd of Beethoven's Ninth, which is now believed to be a reconstructed version - with dress rehearsals etc. - of that night of July in Bayreuth. Timing is the same, paste, tempi, even original noise and scratches are the same. In fact, the fault is not NAXOS'. Mark-Obert Thorn does an excellent job. No, this is because they took the same HMV discs based on which the EMI issued the CD. That historic concert has been recently remastered and issued - a formidable reading, rendering, and remastering - on ORFEO, which is based on archival discs at Bayreuth.
