3.0 out of 5 stars TNA in a nutshell, 1 Nov 2008
By R. Wood "ryecroftwood2" - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
TNA Wrestling is one of those things that, in my opinion...is necessary. Now, I am a WWE fan, first and foremost. But TNA has a RIGHT to exist. Let's face facts, WWE was at its hottest when it was the WWF, and warring for supremacy with WCW and ECW in the nineties. Fans deserve alternative presentations of wrestling, and that's what TNA is doing this decade. Competition makes the organizations come up with new ways to entertain fans, and provides what's needed for people who are looking for something different.

TNA has grown steadily in prominence since its birth back in 2002. While it still has a long way to go before it can be considered serious competition to WWE, I like what I've seen from this promotion...to a point. Don't get me wrong, TNA has a lot of awesome talent, a loyal fan base, and all the necessary tools it needs to cement its legacy. It DESERVES to succeed. It just despairs me that it's constantly hampered by insane booking, ridiculous storylines, over-constant face/heel turns, too many gimmicks and Vince Russo, the man who put WCW out of business.

All this madness impeding this otherwise fine promotion...is what's been perfectly captured in this DVD. TNA: The 50 Greatest Moments is a countdown show (presented by the announce team, Mike Tenay and Don West), highlighting the `greatest' moments in TNA's history from 2002 to 2006. The show lasts three hours and features comments from several of TNA's stars.

I have to point out first-off that this is NOT TNA's "50 Greatest Moments". The whole programme feels as though the producers have just randomly chosen a lot of clips to make up this DVD. It feels like WWE's John Cena: My Life DVD, in that it's a good release that could've been so much more, if they'd have bothered to put more effort into it.

The clips basically showcases major debuts, segments/angles, victories/defeats, real-life triumphs and disasters and some of the most spectacular matches/moments that made TNA fans chant "Holy S**T!" and "This is awesome!" All well and good, especially with the TNA stars providing great insight into these moments. And for those who've never seen TNA before, there's a good amount of material that will `wow' viewers.

Unfortunately, there's some equally bad stuff that will either bore people to death, or put them off completely. And that rings true to how senseless TNA's booking committee can be. The biggest example is the fire that broke out at the 2006 Hard Justice event, which stopped the show and forced everyone to evacuate the building. WHY is this on the DVD? It could've cost people's lives and that's NOT something to be proud of. The fact that everything was alright, the show was allowed to continue, and the TNA performers and fans were able to say, "The show must go on," does speak highly of all those involved, though. Still, it's hardly what I would call a `great' moment and should've been documented on another DVD.

Other problems include some dull moments involving celebrities like Chris Rock, the Tennessee Titans, Country Singer Toby Keith, the NFL's Brian Urlacher and baseball player A.J. Pierzynski. TNA were trying to mirror WWE's success by having celebrity involvement on their programme, which is fine, but unlike WWE's use of real-life celebrities, there's no fun or real purpose to be found here. It's just monotonous and really overdone.

The angle where TNA stars invaded WWE filming their Royal Rumble 2005 commercial didn't really impress me, either. And after the show had finished, I'd really had enough of Tenay and West's atrocious commentary and all the footage featuring Jeff Jarrett. It's like how Triple H was in WWE; too much hogging the world belt, running over so much deserving talent and being forced down our throats, despite being a great wrestler/character/heel. Thankfully, that's something that's greatly declined in recent times.

Despite all these criticisms, you mustn't let any of that deter you from the epic stuff that TNA delivers. As the fans have said plenty of times, there are moments here that are TRULY, TRULY awesome. The sheer innovation, creativity and thrills from things like the X-Division, the King of the Mountain match and the Ultimate X match are absolutely amazing. To see Jeff Hardy deliver perhaps his most devastating Swanton Bomb ever on Abyss is breathtaking, and the cage-walk into a hurricanrana by Elix Skipper is out of this world. Godlike cage matches featuring America's Most Wanted, Triple X and the Naturals merit replaying again and again, and you won't get enough of seeing guys like Samoa Joe, AJ Styles and Christopher Daniels in action. Believe me!

Other highlights are the debuts of guys like Christian Cage, Jeff Hardy, Team 3D (the former Dudley Boys), highlights of the Victory Road 2004 and Lockdown 2005 pay-per-views, Sting's successful comeback, Abyss and Sabu's violent Barbed Wire Massacre match, the NWA world title victories of fighting legend Ken Shamrock, Christian and Rhino (who has since been criminally misused), Jeff Jarrett's attack on Hulk Hogan and the debut of Impact! on Spike TV.

Even though the whole programme feels random and disjointed at times, it DOES get better as it goes along. The music video at the start is very nice as well. But the lack of extras is really disappointing. It would've really helped this DVD to have some of their best matches included in their entirety. And the fact that this DVD was released before Kurt Angle arrived was a premature and grave error. Angle going to TNA (in my opinion) was the greatest thing that ever happened to the company, and that would've really made this DVD outstanding if management had held back this release.

TNA: The 50 Greatest Moments, despite its severe problems, is a good DVD, but could've been so much more. There're much better DVDs out there, that show TNA at its best (such as PPV and superstar releases). Take this or leave it.
