5.0 out of 5 stars Great musicianship makes this a top recommendation, 23 Feb 2007
By Colin Fortune (Birmingham, UK) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
There are no antiphonal canons in the 1812 and no whipping up of frenzy. Instead there is everything else that goes to make this choral version (actually a later arrangement by an American conductor, which works very well) into a seriously-considered and musically satisfying experience. The clarity of the orchestral playing (divided first and second violins, minimal use of vibrato, sweet woodwind, rich brass and arresting percussion) the supple expressivity of the chorus and the imaginative direction of the conductor are outstanding. No rabble-rousing pot-boiler here: Pappano's flexible phrasing turns this into a fine symphonic poem - exciting, yearning and noble. This is the most satisfying 1812 I have ever heard.

Francesca di Rimini and Romeo and Juliet are, if anything, even more superbly set before the listener and the extracts from Eugene Onegin make me long for a complete version conducted by Pappano and using the same orchestra. The digital recording is rich and detailed. A wonderful disc that should win prizes in 2007 and be heard by anyone who values Tchaikovsky.

4.0 out of 5 stars Vivid & Noble Tchaikovsky, 1 Jun 2008
By Scriabinmahler (Cambridge UK) - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)

I totally agree with the reviewer. This is not bombastic & over-emotional Tchaikovsky performance of Stokowski or Svetlanov, but vividly captured & eloquent performance with noble restraint. Pappano's experience with operatic works is evident in each work, masterfully building up drama and intensity, for example in R&J Overture and Francesca. 1812 Overture's choral part has lovely subtlety as well as glorious sonority. Only drawback is that the finale is rather flat, with all percussion instruments muffled in the background, and bass drums are used instead of real artillery.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful, 14 Sep 2009
By M. Ash (Lancashire, UK) - See all my reviews

I agree completely with the other reviewers here. Far too many recordings of these works are about bangs and crashes with everything leading towards the climaxes and no real sense of the overall shape and variety of the music. Tchaikovsky is, all too often, made out to be a bombastic composer of orchestral fireworks - a heart-over-head romantic wearing his heart on his sleeve.

Pappano takes a different approach. The emotional and dynamic aspects of the music are amply communicated but they are made more effective by the more controlled and noble approach which is demonstrated across this very satisfying programme. In Pappano's hands the 'Romeo & Juliet' Fantasy Overture captures not just the drama and passion of the text but also the atmosphere of Shakespeare's great work. It has a tangible sense of atmosphere in the same way as Zeferelli's great film of the play, and you feel as if Tchaikovsky really understands every dimension of the plot and characters.

Another great highlight of this disc is the wonderful performance of the '1812 Overture'. The choral version is beautiful and, again, there is a superb sense of the work as a whole, rather than a collection of exciting climaxes and recognisable melodies. I applaud the decision to use orchestral percussion rather than real canon fire - it sounds just as exciting but not as sensationalist.

EMI really seem to have hit the spot with their orchestral recordings lately and this is no exception. The sound is superb throughout, really bringing out the intricacies and textural attention to detail in these excellent performances.

Highly recommended.
