Don't make the mistake of casting this album aside, 7 Jan 2007
I followed the rise of Taylor Hicks through American Idol 2006 with my eyes glued to the television.
The fact that Simon Cowel overlooked this man's talent and that he only got through the first audition by a 2 to 1 vote , then went on to win the whole thing speaks volumes about just how wrong these so called experts can be.
In truth i would describe this album as a grower. I brought two copies
one for my mum and one for myself and my wife to share. I admittedly made the mistake of thinking 'what did i buy this for' and getting ready to flog it on Amazon. But, i spent a lot of time around my mums house over X-mas and she played it a couple of times and i found myself playing the whole album through and through.
The fact that this album made a debut at no.2 on the Billboard album chart in America and then went out of the top 10 on the next showing proves that other people have made my mistake in their thousands.
The three stand out tracks, in my opinion are: track 4 'Gonna Move', track 6 'Give me Tonight' and my favourite track 7 'Just to feel that way'
I would give this album 5 stars if there had been a couple of quality cover versions that he had sung live on Idol, but put that down either to Red tape, or Mr. Hicks moving in his own direction, or possibly both.
Ironically, with the risk of sounding fickle, the Paul Young cover 'Wherever i lay my hat' is probably the weakest song on the album even though i like Paul young's version.
I hope that Taylor is around for years and years and if you think that only Brits are the true stars from these music based reality shows, then i'm affraid that you need to widen your horizons.
If you are willing to approach musical talent with an open mind,i also highly recommend the winner of 'WORLD IDOL', Kurt Nilsen and his debut 'I', Simon Cowel described this mans voice as 'astonishing'(he got it spot on this occasion) This can be purchased on Amazon 'as cheap as chips' and yes, the album is sung in English even though Norwegian is his first language.

The heck with the naysayers who say this album isn't this or that. The fact is this album is all that! It's a pure album made in the vein of the albums of the 60s, 70s, and 80s. This album has a variety of songs and styles in the vein of Elvis Presley. Elvis was at any given time the King of Rock, the King of Ballads, the King of Love, the King of Country, and the King of R&B, as well as the King of Christmas and the King of Gospel. This album has great replay value and the songs will no doubt tranfer well to the live stage.
Elvis' Sun songs are among his best in part to their rawness. The same can be said of pre-Idol Taylor. But Elvis moved on to RCA and made more produced records and they are classics. Taylor's move to a real record label is the same. Taylor is in the big time now. Under the Radar was great for what it was but would be considered amateurish if released by a big name label. The same is true of Elvis' Sun singles.
In short, this is a funky album and a solid first release. And Taylor will make the songs the best live numbers in years.
A great artist makes music for himself and for the feel - commerical success be d-mned. Taylor has done just that. Rock on, Taylor. We love you! Taylor sings that he's "Gonna Move," and with this album so are the rest of us.
