Supernatural, like so many successful shows before it, starts with a simple concept. When their father goes missing, two brothers--Dean (Jensen Ackles) and Sam (Jared Padalecki) Winchester--head off across the country to try and find him. But their journey isn’t easy, especially when you consider the assortment of spirits and nightmarish creatures that stand in their path.

On paper, that sounds a derivative mix of many shows that have gone before it. And to some extent, that’s what Supernatural is, yet its mix is nonetheless compelling. What lifts it above the norm is the quality both of the writing, and crucially, the direction of the show. There are moments that are spooky, and some that are downright scary, with plenty of suspense linking the two. And while the 22 episodes have their fair share of peaks and troughs, Supernatural has an edge about it that easily carries it through its slower points.

At the heart of the show, ironic considering the number of other programmes it tips its hat to, is a desire to do things its own way, and for that reason, come Supernatural’s maiden season finale, it leaves a real thirst for more episodes. Fortunately, the second season is already in the can, and we suspect it’ll continue to grow the number of fans that Supernatural is rightly earning for itself. --Jon Foster

For me, the best thing about this show is the characters. Sure there's a monster to deal with every episode (and sometimes they are geniunely scary), but what really holds "Supernatural" together is the relationship between brothers Sam and Dean Winchester.

The basic premise is this: In 1983 the Winchester family was visited by a supernatural force that killed wife and mother Mary Winchester. John Winchester then trains himself and his two sons to deal with all things paranormal because he's desperate to hunt down and kill the thing that murdered his wife.

22 years later, John disappears and Dean has to get his brother Sam (who has some pretty serious issues with his dad) out of college so they can find him...

Needless to say, things get complicated quick.

Sure most of the plots have been done before in some other way but this show reinvents them enough to make it all new again.

Beneath the monsters and the mayhem is a powerful undercurrent of emotion driving both brothers and that's what makes "Supernatural" something different. You see so many sides to the characters and they develop more and more across the whole season. Almost every episode adds depth to their past, with little mentions of childhood events that really gives the relationship added depth. There's even an episode with flashbacks to the past ("Something Wicked") and it is by far one of the best.

Come for the monsters, stay for the brothers.

And no review would be complete without mentioning the car. If nothing else, watch Supernatural for the car. It is a thing of beauty.

Great first season. Season 2 just started here in the US and it shows no sign of slowing down.

If you like this sort of thing, of course.

Where shall I start? Well, the chemistry between the actors is great. A lot of people measure how good a film is by how good-looking the actors are (I've done it sometimes as well), but in this case - I think that the actors worked well together. In a way, you could really think of them as brothers.

The storylines in most of the episodes are interesting as well. To be honest, when I first saw this series, I assumed that it would be quite boring, since all the main characters would be doing is travelling around the country looking for the Supernatural. I must say that I was pleasantly surprised.

For a first season, this series looks very promising - and is actually one of the few series I've started watching almost as soon as it came out. (I actually saw the third episode first).

I do have the complain that the UK version of Season 1 doesn't have any special features, though. It would be nice to see those.

but it's let down by the lack of special features. Again and again this happens: we get the show without the features that the US fans get. It's a small complaint, maybe, but it does detract from the boxset. It leaves a bitter taste in the mouth and it's hard to ignore, hence the four stars, rather than the five it deserves.

Overall though, this show is, as I have stated in the title, incredible. Brilliant acting, dramatic storylines and genuinely frightning monsters combine to make it one of the most involving shows in the past few years. The episode 'Bloody Mary' frightened me so much I couldn't sleep that night. Or it could have been down to the exam I had the next day.
Either way, though, this show is not to be missed. It might not shock the hard-core horror fans, but the talented Padalecki and Ackles make it much more than just a worthwhile investment. If only it wasn't so underrated.
