In 1956 at age 21 Terry Lightfoot formed his first New Orleans band to become a major part of the `trad-boom' of the 1950s and 1960s - and he is still leading a group and still playing clarinet. The tracks on this CD were recorded in 1961 and 1962 when Terry Lightfoot's New Orleans Jazzmen were at their peak, and the chosen repertoire allows them to display their many talents. The CD starts with one of the band's novelty hits - a lively and catchy TV theme tune - `The Old Pull n Push'. This is followed by an excellent group rendition of the more earnest `Wimoweh', and then an empathetic vocal `Long Gone From Bowling Green'. The show-piece `Big Noise From Winnetka' is a competent performance and best when Terry's clarinet intervenes - and for me is happily shorter than some drawn out totally bass-drum renditions! This is perhaps the only number on the CD, apart from `Dave's Departure', that cannot be described as "carefree" or "good-time". Even so - it is a great CD.

Terry Lightfoot's true jazz qualities for both `traditional' as well as `trad' shine through with `Panama' and `Savoy Blues' and later with a superb `Muskrat Ramble', and diversity is underlined by a `Dixieland' version of the popular tune `Margie'. Terry's individual supremacy is demonstrated via Edmund Hall's composition `Flying High' where the clarinet excels - though the drumming may be obtrusive to some. Similarly with `Avalon' the clarinet is lilting, but this time the banjo may be allowed too much scope. The balance is right with ensemble, trumpet lead and interweaving clarinet on `That's A Plenty', and for typical New Orleans blues on `Tin Roof Blues' and `Wolverine Blues', and the remaining blues `Tishomingo Blues' is a wonderful soulful performance. Louis Armstrong's vocal number `Old Man Mose' comes across well, and the ensemble playing on `Georgia Camp Meeting' is perfect. The final 4 tracks are somewhat unusual with pleasing versions of Cole Porter's popular song `True Love' and `The Whiffenpoof Song' better known from its lyrics "we're poor little lambs who have lost our way". Apparently the number `Dave's Departure' was written in honour of a recording engineer leaving the studios - and it must have been a sad send-off! Upbeat tempo returns for a fine vocal on the final track `Oh, You Beautiful Doll'. This is good-time jazz of the highest order.
