5.0 out of 5 stars Top Class Ives Symphonies, 16 Jun 2009
By Mr. A. R. Boyes (Newcastle, England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
The performances of both symphonies are exemplary with a warm recorded sound. The first symphony is a significant and daring work and shouldn't be dismissed as a mere student work. The Fourth is one of the great symphonies of the twentieth century, which has had to wait a long time of rperofmances that measure up. This one does and the players make it sound easy to play. My only slight reservation was that the tempo of the slow movement was a little hurried but this is a very minor quibble. This is a recording that this great work deserves.

1.0 out of 5 stars Fourth place, 30 Aug 2009
By J. Powell - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I bought this cd specifically for the 4th Symphony and the beautiful slow movement. However, it was a bitter disappointment. The richness, depth and uplifting power of the slow movement was completely missing.

I do have a record (but not record player) of the symphony which I bought in the 1980s (Three Places In New England; Symphony No.4; Central Park In The Dark : Boston Symphony Orchestra, I think). Absolutely marvellous. It might this this cd, although the date appears different and the record sleeve had a map image of Central Park: Ives: Three Places In New England; Symphony No.4; Central Park In The Dark
