CD Description

This fairly extensive box set collects six Iggy Pop live shows from between 1977 and 1981. Drawing from all over Iggy'scareer to that point, the set finds the godfather of punk rock in his absolute prime during the commercial and artisticpeak of the original punk movement. Iggy's performances during this period were simply incendiary, baiting the audiencewith venom and wit and attacking the songs as if he's in a rock-&-roll street fight. Iggy's revolving-door band (which at points featured David Bowie on keyboards and Sex Pistol Glen Matlock on bass) act as a leather-clad Famous Flames to Iggy's blood-and-peanut-butter-smeared James Brown. Far fromyour average batch of bootlegs, the recording quality here is surprisingly good, making it a worthy purchase for non-Iggy fanatics as well.

this release could have been the greatest thing ever, particularly disc 1, but its ruined by horrible mastering, someone smothered the 3/28/77 show in digital noise reduction, which has resulted in digital artefacts.
listening is just not a pleasure any more

did someone really think that a bit of hiss was less annoying than this!

if you know this won't bother you , go ahead and buy this set, the performances and setlist are amazing,
theres breathtaking harmonies from Bowie & the sales Brothers
but if the digital artefacts are likely to annoy you, then i'd advise you to get the wonderful "tv eye live 1977" CD

i wish this release was more like the sex pistols box sets "never trust a hippy" or "indecent exposure" they were sympathetically mastered by a genius


the killing joke release "bootleg vinyl archive" was another example of good mastering for this type of challenging material,

this is where iggy pop is really at home ..on the stage ..transformed into a predatory animal pounding his chest and delivering killer lines like " im a street walkin cheetah with a heart full of naplam " they dont make 'em like that these days ! this box set is a superb document of iggys return in the mid seventies from exile in rehab or on the road as bowies travelling companion. It has quite obviously been put together with passion and care great photos , great shows the domino club 1978 with fred smith and gary rasmussen and scott asheton as his band is particularly high octane or indeed the 1979 show with ex pistol glen matlock and ex damned brian james both in the band !! not aimed at passive buyers but an absolute must for true iggy fans. cant wait for the next one !
