Synopsis
The ganglands of Scotland are no place for children; but for four street-wise youngsters, it is their only reality. Raised in a culture where criminals are glamorized and violence is the order of the day, it’s unsurprising that they are so seduced by the gangster lifestyle and its promise of instant wealth. Inevitably, the four kids are drawn deeper and deeper into a world they don’t belong, and their journey becomes a struggle for survival. Like Ken Loach’s ‘teenager versus the City’ drama SWEET SIXTEEN, IN A MAN’S WORLD is a gritty portrayal of the hope, desperation and betrayal these kids face--told from their perspective--as they journey to the unforgiving heart of the Celtic underworld. It marks the feature length debut of writer-director Lee Hutcheon, who has drawn much of the film’s story from his own experiences of growing up in Aberdeen. As such, he forgoes casting big name actors in favour of local Scottish talent, who add an air of raw honesty to the film.

5.0 out of 5 stars A FILM WITH SOME REAL BRIT GRIT, 29 Sep 2006
Finally a British movie that isnt scared to wear it's heart on it's sleeve. A unique insight into a world gone mad on the streets of Scotland.
A tough story that is delivered in a raw and honest fashion without the frilly bits. A blast from the past that reminded me of how are British films used to look in the days of Scum, Just A Boy's Game and Quadraphenia.

Refreshing to see a film that simply tells it the way it is.

2.0 out of 5 stars raw, rugged,rubbish, 4 Jan 2007

(REAL NAME)
'In A Man's World' like it was made on some sort of local authority arts grant, perhaps by recovering heroin addicts, or maybe the staff of the council drains office on a weekend team building exercise. Amateurishly acted (by amateur actors, but that's no excuse) and featuring some of the most cliched and inept direction, filmwork and storytelling I've ever seen on screen, It's like a 70s Children's Film Foundation production with swearing. This film will be praised for it's 'realism' but 9 year olds running around curiously deserted-looking housing estates with guns and heroin aren't really that common, even in Scotland. I'll never understand the mindset of the kind of artist who shows his empathy with the underclass by portraying them as more wretched than they actually are in reality.

5.0 out of 5 stars Timely and authentic insight into gang culture, 26 April 2007
By pointone (Bournemouth UK) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
The film represents an incredible achievement by Director Lee Hutcheon working with a virtually non existent budget and using some local children from the gangland area of Aberdeen.

Turning his constraints into strength Hutcheon has created a gritty, moving and extraordinarily insightful drama revealing what it is like to live in a neighbourhood terrorised by gangs.

Based on a real life account the film exudes authenticity, the gang of four boys at the heart of the drama observing the casual, routine nature of the adult gangsters at work, "it is just business" a gang boss comments.

Even more important it gives us a realistic take on the current rise in gang crime.

This is a very important film indeed.
