This is the opera that brought savage and unjust condemnation on Shostakovich from the Soviet authorities in the 1930s amidst the first of Stalin's purges. It was rehabilitated triumphantly in the 1960s, when Shostakovich attended all the productions at the top opera houses globally. He singled out this production, from Kiev, for its musical and dramatic excellence.

Lev Atomvyan, composer, close personal friend and secretary of Shostakovich, attended every single performance of Lady Macbeth of Mstensk in the 1930s and the 1960s (renamed Katerina Izmailova). Reminiscing about the various performers of the title role, he said Vishnevskaya's was "three heads higher than all the others. This was confirmed by her performance in the film of Katerina Izmailova." [see Elizabeth Wilson's excellent 'Shostakovich - A Life Remembered'].

Vishnevskaya was herself a close friend of Shostakovich, as the wife of his pupil and protege Rostropovich.

At last on general DVD release. I can't wait...
