This is the latest offering from the co-founder of the excellent Type label, John Twells, and it's curiously different from his past efforts. Although no songs are sung, its cover art and ominous electro-acoustic sounds succeed in evoking some kind of nautical zombie nightmare. This would work well as a horror movie soundtrack, and it's suggestive of the atmospheres favoured by movie maestros like Dario Argento, even if its sonic textures are far more elaborate than anything achieved by Goblin. Proceedings begin with the dissonant strings of `The Gate' which are combined with foreboding creaking and clanging sounds, as if we are trapped within the claustrophobic confines of a deserted vessel, inhabited only by decayed bodies that merely move with ravenous mindlessness. Yes, this is skin-crawling stuff, but Xela knows we can only take so much, and so `The Gate' segues into `Linseed', which, with its identifiable acoustic guitar refrain is not so much terrifying as it is melancholic, as if our protagonist is becoming accustomed to his ghastly predicament. By the time we reach `Wet Bones' an echoing bell resonates, establishing a sense of desolation, which is subsequently mitigated by a beautiful acoustic guitar and harmonica, suggesting that perhaps all hope is not lost. And so it goes on- you can imagine your own story to fit this music. Readers may by now be worrying that this album can deliver no more than mood, and a pretty spooky, unpleasant one at that. To draw such a conclusion without first listening would be doing `The Dead Sea' a huge disservice though, and I must emphatically assure you that this is an incredibly innovative and ambitious work that creates far more than mere sonic texture-there are real tunes here, and damn good ones at that. This is both original and compelling. With `The Dead Sea' Xela is likely to attract the attention of those with power and influence, and whatever decisions he makes, his career can only go onwards and upwards from here. Unmissable listening, like nothing you have heard before.
