The Skygreen Leopards have previously released a couple of long-players and a mini that I know about, but "Disciples of California", recorded in 2006, is my first foray into their sounds.
Written by Donovan Quinn (vocals, piano, electric piano) and Glenn Donaldson (guitars, vocals, organ, bowed banjo) the sound is a slightly countrified, sometimes slowcore folk.
Although often feited as one of the psych-folk breed it's a million miles away from the pretentious bandwagon hoppers that have come out to peddle their cod-folk pastiches.
For a start, this is a Jagjaguar album. The vocals ocassionally remind one of Cub Country and at other times of a weary Lou Reed. It has subtle Johnny Cash country elements in Waymon Miles's soft pedal steel playing and Jasmyn Wong's unobtrusive drumming and these combine with Quinn and Donaldson's songwriting to create bruised, hushed indie/folk. The sound lies somewhere between the warm strummings of The Great Sixth Lake; the late night folk of The Lowlights. If you like your music beatiful, sad-eyed and a little bit wan, you'll love this! It's peaceful country/folk music similar in many ways to that coming out of keeprecordings in the guise Norfolk and Western, Hula/Chad King et al
