Product Description

Classic slice of Italian 'nunsploitation' starring former Miss Britain Anne Heywood along with a bevy of beautiful European actresses including Martine Brochard and Ornella Muti. When the Saint Archangel Convent attempts to recruit a new Mother Superior, the wily Sister Giulia (Heywood) resorts to a veritable catalogue of elaborately evil machinations - including sexual corruption and attempted murder - to secure the top post for herself.

the film is about corruption at all levels of society in catholic church, from the nuns in the convent through to the church leaders and rich patrons. Much of the film centres around the intrigue about who will be the next mother superior following the death of the old one at the start of the film. Loyalties and power struggles come to the fore and pretty soon it is decided who will be next, needless to say it is not based on faith! The most superior sister is poisoned in the process, and the nuns copulate with their lovers and each other. The church is called to investigate the goings on, in the form of Spanish inquisition!

All of the more lurid elements of the film are pretty much non-existent, there are no breasts and not much flesh on show at all. The film feels more like historical drama so fans of nunsploitation will be disappointed. The soundtrack is quite beautiful and evocative at times but even this is not capitalised on throughout the whole film. The photography also starts of quite beautifully shot but toward the end the film seem to drop down a peg.

Overall not really that recommended, but fans of 1970's European melodrama may find something to enjoy.

Given the description here I was expecting a trashy Italian film with poor acting, bad voice dubbing and poor soundtrack, with a plenty of nubile flesh thrown in. Well there is a fair amount of the latter, but in fact it’s quite a serious historical work, reasonably well made for its era. I was aware of the excesses of the church in the days of ‘indulgences’ but this highlighted the corrupting effect on a convent. It may have been dubbed, but it was not noticeable, the acting was a little melodramatic at times, but the story zipped along at a pace.

An enjoyable film to watch – hardly an 18 rating today, but given the nudity and torture maybe not suitable for kids and those of a nervous disposition!

An interesting movie about suppressed desires leading to a brutal inquisition.
A convincing script and acting, with imaginative direction, move it to a level above your usual exploitation movie, HOWEVER, do not be mislead by the graphic sleeve notes, which, as are seen many times on DVDs, make the movie out to be something it is not, and you will be disappointed if you buy this for its alleged torture and lesbian themes. The torture scenes are brief and ill-defined, and the lesbianism practically non-existent. This is supposed to be the full uncensored version, yet I cannot see anything which would have needed cutting anyway. It may have been an 18 rated movie in 1973 but it would be hard to class it as a 15 now. Still it does have have some novelty value because of its production quality. KAN
