This six-disc box set draws together all six volumes of the Tom and Jerry Classic Collection and is packed with nearly nine hours of cartoon capers from everyone's favourite cat and mouse.
Volume 1
Collecting together the works of each producer, Classic Collection Volume 1 starts with the cartoons of the great Fred Quimby and also includes the Hanna Barbera years 1940-1958. Hollywood legend Quimby is largely regarded as creator of the very best Tom and Jerry episodes. He won seven Academy Awards for various Tom and Jerry shorts and received numerous nominations for his animated works.
Volume 2
Tom and Jerry Classic Collection Volume 2continues with the works of Hollywood legend Fred Quimby, who worked closely with Hanna Barbera and together they set the high standard of animation, music, timing and humour for which Tom and Jerry are renowned. Classic Collection 2 includes the Academy Award-winning cartoon shorts "The Cat Concerto" and "The Little Orphan", the Academy Award-nominated "Dr Jekyll and Mr Mouse" and "Hatch Up Your Troubles", plus 20 other classics.
Volumes 3 and 4
Tom and Jerry Classic Collections 3 and 4 brings together the works of Hollywood legends Fred Quimby, Gene Deitch, Chuck Jones and Hanna Barbera, the dream team who presented the pair at their brawling best and won 7 Academy Awards along the way. Great collection, but yes there are a lot of cuts here, and in some of the very best cartoons. The worst offender is the Oscar-winning "The Little Orphan", in which the whole climactic sequence has had to be butchered and re-edited - ruined, really - to accommodate the excision of a blackface gag. (Oddly though, "Mouse Cleaning" and "Casanova Cat", the two cartoons with the most blatant blackface gags, are included unscathed. If you want to get upset by a 50-year old cartoon, there's your chance.)
These cartoons aren't just fun diversions for the kids, they're important pieces of cultural history. We might not like some of the attitudes they reflect, but to pretend they never existed is to invite them to return. If you're afraid of offending anyone, add a disclaimer or a warning on the disc. Publishers of classic cartoons should keep their grubby scissors away from them - especially if they're going to present them as a "Collector's Edition".

I'd suggest avoiding this set (like the previous reviewer said) it's missing episodes, so 'complete' collection is misleading to say the least! It also has many episodes butchered to suit the political correctness brigade. The cartoons were made in the 40's and 50's and that should be taken on board for a collectors release.

I'd suggest buying the 'uncut' VHS videos such as 50th Birthday Collection, available on Amazon from various sellers. As an adult collector, I'm skipping these DVD's and getting the uncut VHS versions, until this is released properly!

this dvd set hasn't been given 3 stars because of the dvds themselves: tom and jerry need no introduction, classic cartoons for all ages. makes a change from playing the old videos.
no, the reason for this review is due to the title of the dvd set: it clearly states the words "complete collection." this particular collection is anything but complete: for some inexplicable reason, two cartoons have been omitted. one of them is "million dollar cat," the other one i don't know. it makes me feel as though i've been slightly swindled. however, it is still possible to buy these missing cartoons on the region 1 releases. beware of the above.

AVOID !! how these idiots have the nerve to censor and butcher an animated short THAT WON AN OSCAR is beyond me. Buy this only if you are NOT a collector OR are a collector and want to collect incomplete things.

Obviously the casual viewer will be happy enough, but really - to censor the artwork of an earlier age is unconscionable. We shouldn't let this kind of thing pass without comment.

I'm grateful to the reviewers who pointed out the changes that have been made to the original cartoons in releasing them on these DVDs - cropping images, redubbing the voice of the maid. The voice characterisation of the maid was every bit as essential a part of Tom and Jerry as was the music of Scott Bradley. I am cynical enough to believe that the primary motivation behind this was not political correctness, but in extending the copyright shelf life of the movies, since the studio will argue that these are now "new versions". In their original form, I would have bought every DVD available. In this butchered form, I will never buy any.

As with many of the other reviews for this boxset I am upset, furious and feel ripped off that many episodes have either been omitted or tampered with. Also, I remember many more Hanna Barbera editions than available here - and these ones are the best of all. Why lie and mislead? if you're frightened that something may offend then say so on the packaging, Crikey, this is afterall a cartoon set from over thirty years ago meant for kids at Saturday morning flics. Pathetic!.

Just who do these self appointed liberal do-gooders think they are, are we so thick we can't decide for ourselves what we want to see and what we don't. I despise PC'ism in all it's guises, it's wrong to thrust our 21st century sensibilites onto earlier documents that reflect a different age and viewpoint, it smacks of arrogance that we are right and they were wrong.
Artistic expression should be regarded as sacrosanct, not something that is allowed to be interfered with when morals and mores change.
(Thoughts from a saddened Tom and Jerry fan.)
