Amazon.co.uk Review

NCIS takes the CSI formula, throws in a good dose of JAG, and comes up with an entertaining series that takes advantage of the actors' likeability. The season begins with the introduction a couple new regulars--agent Timothy McGee (Sean Murray) and assistant medical examiner Jimmy Palmer (Brian Dietzen). And one cast member departs the show by the end of the season. The six-disc set includes all 23 episodes, which aired on CBS during 2004-2005. The show's sophomore year begins with "See No Evil," in which a Navy officer (guest star David Keith) is forced to embezzle millions of dollars, or risk having his wife and blind daughter killed by a kidnapper (played by Tom Cruise's cousin William Mapother). Led by Jethro Gibbs (Mark Harmon), the crack NCIS team comes through to save the day and reveal the mastermind behind the twisted case. Gibbs doesn't display much more emotion this season than he did in the show's debut, but he's just as sarcastic (and even tempered) when being threatened. During one altercation, the mafia threatens to kill his father, brothers and uncles. Non-plussed, Gibbs calmly says that while he has no male relatives still alive, he'd be happy to fax over the numbers of his three ex-wives.

With the help of his ace medical examiner Dr. Donald "Ducky" Mallard (David McCallum from The Man from U.N.C.L.E), Gibbs and his team are almost invincible when it comes to solving complicated crimes. Whether he's piecing together the bones of a body, or performing an autopsy on a crisply burnt poodle, Ducky is matter-of-fact as he talks to his dead "clients." Of his nervous but eager assistant Jimmy, Ducky notes, "He means well, but sometimes I have an overwhelming urge to slap him." This season, viewers get to see the romantic (and slightly gross) side of Ducky as he briefly romances a doctor half this age. Also on hand to aid (and annoy) Gibbs are happy-go-lucky Tony DiNozzo (Michael Weatherly), former Secret Service agent Caitlin Todd (Sasha Alexander), and forensics expert Abby Sciuto (Pauley Perrette), who can solve anything if you say "please" and bring her a Big Gulp to sip. Look for a gentle guest appearance by Charles Durning as a Medal of Honor recipient who wants to turn himself in for killing his best friend and fellow comrade during World War II. While the plot twists won't surprise most viewers, the acting, writing, and spirit of the episode leaves the viewer feeling satisfied. --Jae-Ha Kim

Synopsis

JAG spin-off series NCIS centres on the Naval Criminal Investigative Service, a crack team of government agents that operates outside the military chain of command. These special agents traverse the globe, investigating crimes linked to the Navy or Marine Corps – from murder and espionage to terrorism and stolen submarines. More than just an action-packed drama, NCIS shows the sometimes complex, always amusing dynamics of a team forced to work together under high-stress situations. Series 2 sees the tragic loss of Special Agent Caitlin 'Kate' Todd (Sasha Alexander, DAWSON'S CREEK) in an explosive finale.

4.0 out of 5 stars big sis found a gem, 13 Oct 2007
By Susan Belcher "Su B" (St Helens, England) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
My sister found this hidden gem quite a while ago and she put me on to it in the last few months. I hadn't seen it before then, and now I'm hooked.

It is the spin off from the navy series JAG, which I had tried and hated, so when the sis put me on to NCIS I was very wary. I am relieved to say it is nothing like JAG, NCIS is significantly better. I don't know whether it's better acting, the fact that the people seem to get on well and have fun or that it's better written, but it is a more appealling series.

I don't get to see the programme when it is broadcast on Fridays because it clashes with St Helens RLFC home matches so I am dependant on DVDs for my fix. As usual region 2 means 2nd class dvds - please can we have extras.

This is the second series and unlike some other programmes survived the axe it is as good (if not better) than the first - I found that I was attached to the characters, even one that I didn't really like from series one.

NCIS is very enjoyable, with great characters and stories, and I would recommend it to anyone who likes murder-mysteries (a 5 star series), however it loses one star for the lack of extras.

5.0 out of 5 stars NCIS better than JAG?!?, 31 Dec 2006
By M. Bates "mjarbar" (Basildon, Essex) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
With a good mix of action and humor (I wont say comedy) this show has good episodes that always have something happening. The first season of the show was good but with the second season you find the charecters more established and you find yourself more in tune to how they operate. Watch for surprising twist to the season finale (I will not tell you what happens but you will find yourself shocked and saying 'they cant do that' as well as the three dreaded words " To Be Continued..." AGRHHHH...)

This series does not have any of the romance associated with the later series of JAG but it does have an edge that for some reason keeps you watching.

Buy it - you wont be disapointed.
