Product Description

Description

In 1965, Small Faces came blasting out of England with style, wild abandon, and hits. But those hits were limited to the United Kingdom and Europe, failing to make inroads in the United States until the band's restructuring as The Faces in1970. Much like the early Who, Small Faces had an exuberance that threatened to detonate the band's songs but instead kept the players rolling forward with unrelenting fervor.
Small Faces' debut album shows a band able to both tackle tunes from the belly of American R&B and to offer up its own bracing originals. Check out "It's Too Late", impressive by any standards but all the more so when one considers that these guys were barely into their '20s. Steve Marriott, a singer who could shout with the best of them, fronted Small Faces. His rasp is infectious, believable, and highly controlled, never sounding like the affectation of a young guy who wants to sound like an old bluesman. Those who are only familiarwith Small Faces from the band's later incarnation as the Rod Stewart-fronted Faces should look into SMALL FACES for anearful of how it all began.

About the Artist

The Small Faces debut album from 1966 has been digitally remastered by Gary Moore from the Original Master Tapes and now boasts an additional 11 Bonus Tracks including versions of songs which only ever appeared on French EPs.

5.0 out of 5 stars Supreme debut album, 23 Dec 2006
By Martin Payne "makingtime" (Hampshire) - See all my reviews

Ogden's Nut Gone Flake may be the album that the Small Faces are best remembered for but this debut long player on Decca Records is awesome. This is probably the closest to what the band actually sounded like live at the time with extending jamming on some tracks and the influences such as Booker T Jones and Steve Cropper clearly evident. Superb.

5.0 out of 5 stars BRILLIANT NOSTALGIA, 25 Nov 2006
By Michael J. Taylor - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
The 40th Anniversary of this album certainly lives up to expectations although some reviews say the bonus tracks are only available on French Ep's. The French Ep's are exactly the same versions as the official UK releases. However, it is only a slight mistake. Some of the bonus tracks here actually appeared on a FRENCH LP released in the 70s. This album is well worth getting though as the sound quality is outrageously good. Not to be missed!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Magnificent debut album, 27 Sep 2007
In an era that was hardly short of great artists, the Small Faces still stand out. They had it all, style, taste and above all class. This debut encapsulates them at their blistering best; Marriott's supreme, passionate vocals and McLagan's organ playing giving them a highly distinctive sound. For less than five quid this is a must have and this must surely rank as one of the finest and most conistent debut albums of the sixties. A must own for all MOD and British Beat fans.
