ECW is back!, 4 Nov 2006
After the overwhelming success of both the Rise and Fall of ECW DVD and last year's One Night Stand PPV, WWE has decided to milk the ECW cash cow full time by relaunching it as its third brand of entertainment. And here is the launching pad, the 2006 edition of One Night Stand, which is certainly one of the best pay-per-views of the year.
Tazz vs. Jerry `The King' Lawler
Not so much a match as an opening segment. I had actually got my hopes up for this for no reason, expecting an entertaining affair when it all ends in thirty seconds. This is a classic example of how anything can get over in ECW as long as it involves ECW, but it's entertaining for what it is. (4/10)
Kurt Angle vs. Randy Orton
Watching this made me sad. I MISS Kurt Angle. And watching him wrestle here is a reminder that WWE will never be the same again now that he's gone. This a quality wrestling match. I personally would've liked it to be more fast-paced and action filled but this is a quality bout nonetheless, and one of the best matches of the night. Give Orton extra credit for withstanding the crowd's ravenous taunting. (8/10)
The FBI vs. Super Crazy and Tajiri
Absolutely great tag team match. Great mat wrestling, great technical and high-flying skill, great innovation, great everything. Brilliant performance by all four men (especially Tajiri who I missed), Big Vito plays his role at ringside very well, and the aftermath featuring the Big Show previews how well he was to be used in the new ECW. Quality stuff. (9/10)
JBL's appearance
Since Bradshaw's gimmick change in 2004, he has shown time and time again that he can cut some great promos. This is one of them. A well-timed interlude that showcases how great a heel JBL is. Follows up on what he did last year to the Blue Meanie and announces his replacing of Tazz on Smackdown commentary. Succeeds in making ECW fans loathe JBL even more and great mike work in its own right. (8/10)
World Championship Match
Rey Mysterio (Champion) vs. Sabu
A dream match and one that thankfully succeeds. This is one of Mysterio's best title matches and Sabu amazingly shows that he's got a lot left in the tank. This would be perfect if not for the fact that it's criminally too short and the ending (spectacular as it is) which brings it all to an abrupt halt. (9/10)
Edge, Mick Foley & Lita vs. Tommy Dreamer, Terry Funk & Beulah
Not really a tag match. More a brutal and bloody all-out fight, but one that works very well. Solidly entertaining mike work at the start from Edge, Foley, Lita and indeed Beulah. Have to take away marks for a pointless catfight, which doesn't make sense seeing as how Lita can wrestle and Beulah can't, and I would have liked to see more wrestling moves from the participants involved but this is still horrifically captivating stuff. And of course, it's great to see the Funker, who handles himself surprisingly well given his age. (8/10)
Balls Mahoney vs. Masato Tanaka
Short match that's okay. Nothing too dire, yet nothing really special about it either. The only highlight is Balls' wicked chair shot, and that's about it. (6/10)
Eugene meets the Sandman
Obviously another interlude was needed but why did it have to be this? Pointless segment that's only used to get the Sandman on the show. And where is his awesome `Enter Sandman' theme song by Metallica?! By the way, I think the Eugene character should be retired now. (3/10)
WWE Championship Match
John Cena (Champion) vs. Rob Van Dam
Thoroughly entertaining main event. RVD finally gets the chance he deserves and delivers typically and spectacularly. The crowd adds greatly to the enjoyment factor and Cena does a brilliant job in using the crowd's hostility to his advantage. By all rights a historical match and one that is so much fun to watch again and again. And in spite of what the rather biased ECW fans think, Cena CAN wrestle and more than proves it here. The chemistry between Cena and RVD shines through and the ending is a classic. (8/10)
All in all, despite a few criticisms, ECW One Night Stand 2006 is arguably the best pay-per-view of the year and is proof that a full-time return of ECW is a very good idea. There's first-rate entertainment value aplenty here, classic matches and an ending that will please everyone. This DVD is worth every penny, not just for the show itself, but for the extras as well.
The fan comments, battle royal from WWE vs. ECW: Head to Head special and the opening segment of the ECW on Sci Fi premiere are all worth watching but the ultimate extra is the special bonus disc containing ECW's first-ever pay per view, Barely Legal, in its entirety. I had wanted to watch this for quite some time after seeing highlights on The Rise and Fall of ECW and it's a classic for obvious reasons which you'll see for yourself.
ECW One Night Stand 2006 is a mandatory purchase, plain and simple. It's right up there with WrestleMania. It doesn't matter whether you're a fan of WWE or ECW, it belongs in your wrestling DVD collection either way.

ECW's second victory lap., 13 Aug 2007
After the massive success of the first One Night Stand in 2005 and the excellent Rise And Fall of ECW DVD the same year, the WWE's higher-ups decided to relaunch ECW. Whilst since the relaunch, things have changed substantially and popular opinion is that Vince actually just wanted to flog the name while delivering the same WWE product (as any episode of the new ECW will show you), back in June 2006 we still believed, and this Pay Per View, a follow up to the original, while looking a little odd compared to the last one, still for the most part captured the spirit of the original ECW.
The only way you really review a Pay-Per-View, of course, is match-by-match ratings out of five stars, but honourable mention has to go to WWE for their excellent recreation of ECW's vibe; the minimum of effects, a realistic stage, the choice of the Hammerstein Ballroom as a venue and the opening segment being not a match to fire up the standard WWE crowd, but a promo from Paul Heyman to pump up the ECW faithful.
Jerry Lawler vs. Tazz - This isn't of course, actually a match, but more of a worked-shooted situation that dates back as far as 1996 that's just a work for Tazz to choke out Jerry Lawler. - ***
Randy Orton vs. Kurt Angle - This is one of the more dubious matches on the card, featuring as it does two WWE guys (although Kurt had just been signed to the ECW brand), though the fans seem to love Kurt Angle as an ECW-backer; but boy do they hate Randy Orton. Especially in the early days, ECW was known as much for its high quality technical wrestling as for its hardcore elements, and this was very obviously an attempt to feature a technical wrestling match on the Guerrero/Benoit level. It's not quite up to that level, and has a very slow start featuring a lot of headlocks. However, it gets better, they're given enough time to show their chops and the audience gets behind it. Captures the spirit of ECW mat-wrestling even if not reaching its quality. ****
The FBI w/ Big Guido vs. Tajiri and Super Crazy - Now this match is a lot more what technical wrestling, and tag team wrestling, is about. The four wrestlers involved stretch each other in allsorts of directions and perform some great moves that they don't get to do on WWE TV, much to the fans' delight. However, the best part of this match is new ECW signee Big Show coming out afterwards and destroying everyone in the ring, including Big Guido - watch out for his assault on Tony Mamaluke, which involves his devastating Cobra Clutch Backbreaker before he tosses Mamaluke across the ring as if he were weightless. A great match. ****
Rey Mysterio vs. Sabu (World Heavyweight Title Match) - Mysterio is soundly booed in this match due to his status as a WWE World Champion, and the boos are deafening when he attempts his WWE finisher the 619; a move that's up there with the People's Elbow as far as how devastating it is. However, aside from that part, Mysterio and Sabu manage to really capture what the extreme luchadores used to be about, and both chairs and tables are put to excellent use. However, the disappointing - and disappointingly early - finish really tarnishes this match, ending it on a sour note. - ****
Edge, Mick Foley and Lita vs. Tommy Dreamer, Terry Funk and Beulah - If you've read Mick Foley's book The Hardcore Diaries, you know that he was in a poor frame of mind going into this match and its extremely high quality surely had him sleeping easy that night. As Foley says, three of the four principal members of this match were way past their prime and broken down, with Funk in particular now in his Sixties and with the worst knees in wrestling. However the four of them, plus their respective valets, put on arguably the best match of the entire night, involving trash cans, barbed wire, fire, and Funk's trademark retreat to the back before returning in a blaze of glory.
Furthermore, this is one of the few matches on the card that has real heat - both Foley and Edge are excellent as heels here, using their least popular, least-ECW-type moves just to annoy the crowd and to great effect. For a quick course on how to be a brilliant heel, check out the winning pinfall - and also the promos before the match, featuring the greatest insulting nickname for Tommy Dreamer in the history of wrestling. - *****
Balls Mahoney vs. Masato Tanaka - The match on the card with the absolute least history, it would be hard for Tanaka to follow up his show-stealing performance with Mike Awesome from the previous year. He and Mahoney put on a decent hardcore show, but the match is so disappointingly brief that they never really get cooking properly, - **
Before the main event is an excruciating section featuring Eugene, the WWE's mentally challenged character. Even if you don't find that character to be tasteless, his nails-on-a-chalkboard voice gets old fast and you'll be relieved at the way his impromptu poem ends.
John Cena vs. Rob Van Dam (WWE title match) - The match everyone was talking about, as Cena got booed more than he ever has or ever will, unsuccessfully throwing his shirt and cap to the fans at least six times, every time getting it thrown back at him. With an ominous and infamous sign claiming that 'If Cena wins, we riot,' Cena actually holds his own in a hardcore match against RVD, and the two make a good showing for themselves. It's good, but not nearly as good as it could have been, especially with Rob Van Dam involved in a rare main-event appearance. - ****
All in all, a very good pay-per-view which was just about close enough to ECW to pass muster. While overall not as good as ONS2005, the Funk/Dreamer vs. Foley/Edge match was the best match of any of the ONS pay-per-views before or since. With a phenomenal set of extra features - the entirety of ECW's debut PPV Barely Legal and a pair of segments from the surrounding TV events - this set is absolutely worth your money, be you ECW fan or WWE fan.

WWE Championship Match
John Cena vs. Rob Van Dam 9/10
If you hate John Cena your going to love this match this is classic. Every fan just hates John Cena remember the sign if Cena wins we riot. Every time Cena hit RVD fans were booing. Ending of the match Edge comes out with bike helmet hitting Cena with a spear RVD then goes for a 5 Star Frog Splash to get the win.
Masato Tanaka vs Balls Mahoney
never took notice in the match
Mick Foley, Edge & Lita vs. Terry Funk, Tommy Dreamer & Beulah McGillicutty 10/10
This was one of the best matches of 2006 Mick Foley & Edge hit it off at Wrestlemaina 22 with foley going through the table on fire. Then lead to this match as Foley wanted to team up with Edge to beat Funk & Dreamer. The match is all hardcore Foley and Funk go through tables you can see all the blood the 2 men lost and you can hear Foley and Funk shouting. The end to the match was Edge taking out Dreamer then a sper to Beulah to get the 1,2,3.
World Championship Match
Rey Mysterio vs. Sabu 9/10
Wow now this was a good match Extreme yes it was for sure. The overall ending was Sabu hitting Triple Jump DDT on Rey Mysterio through a Table this match thrus this match was no contest. As both men were out.
Full Blooded Italians (Little Guido & Tony Mamaluke) vs Super Crazy & Tajiri

Tazz vs. Jerry Lawler 5/10
Jerry Lawler thought they would have another fight just as they did back in 2000. This fight all started over as i remember as Jerry calling ECW Extreme Crappy Wrestling once again. Just before the match starts Jerry slaps Joey Styles in the face. The ending of this match ends with Jerry passing out to Tazz with a Tazzmission.
