I hate the term guilty pleasure when it comes to discussion about movies. I mean if you like a film then why should you feel guilty about it? If you are sensible enough to know that a disregarded film is poor on production and story yet entertains you then that is all there is to it really. One such case for myself is with Class Of 1999, Mark L. Lester's loose sci-fi sequel to his own Class Of 1984. I really couldn't recommend this film to anyone with confidence, I just know that I love it, have done since I rented it out of curiosity on VHS many years ago.

The film basically is set in bad future Seattle where anarchy reins in our schools. So into the mix comes three robot teachers on a secretive trial basis, their form of discipline is tough but appears to be working. But things start to go wrong as the teachers start to revert to their battle droid beginnings and it all spirals out of control as they take on the might of the two warring gangs operating out of Kennedy High School.

Think of it as a mixture of Escape From New York and The Terminator and you will be in the same ball park. Tho for the record this is not even close to being as good as either of those movies. Lester's movie actually, in spite of its reviled reputation, comes with some good acting credentials. Malcolm McDowell, Stacy Keach and Pam Grier are the "name" actors, while Patrick Kilpatrick and the cool Bradley Gregg are familiar faces that have fun with the material. It's violent and sweary and full of cheesy dialogue, and naturally the sci-fi led effects are cheap and in keeping with the budget. It's the sort of film that now would go straight to DVD without so much as a blink of an eye. But once a fan of it, you are always a fan of it, because true love never dies.

Acquired taste? For sure. Coolly anarchic in a B movie way? Definitely. So "jump me in, jump me in now". 8/10

An excellent piece of late 80's action horror. Featuring some cyborg teacher killing machines, gun fights, explosions and gang warfare on motorbikes, what more could you want? Featuring some very impressive special effects and stop-frame animation similar to that in Terminator 1, the level of gore is also impressive. Class Of 1999 [1989]

Over the years, there's been a growing problem with youth gangs in and around school areas. By 1999 the problem has become so bad that some schools have shut down, and others have become "fire-free zones" whole areas around schools where the police will no longer enter. The Principal of Kennedy High school has decided that enough is enough, he enlists the help of robotics specialist Dr. Robert Forrest who provides the school with three "tactical education units". Cody Culp has just been released on parole and been ordered to attend the first day of school, he does attend school that morning but not before taking a shortcut through an opposing gangs territory. Culp soon notices that something isn't right about the new teachers, especially when a few students are killed. It turns out that the teachers were previously designed as war machines, and they pack some heavy firepower. The teachers have started to revert back to their previous military settings, meaning Culp is going to have to rally the gangs and fight back.

The acting is a bit hit and miss, but there's some pretty well known faces in the cast. Malcolm McDowell plays the Principal who soon starts to regret hiring the new teachers, he's not in it for that long and his scenes were shot in just two days. Stacey Keach is Dr. Forrest, he plays the typical mad doctor. He's obviously having fun camping it up with his bleached blonde mullet and weird contact lenses. Blaxploitation star Pam Grier doesn't get quite enough to do as one of the robotic teachers, as most of the best scenes are left to the other two teachers. I love the performances of Patrick Kilpatrick and John P. Ryan as the other teachers, they really make the film as entertaining as it is.Read more ›

I bought this as I recalled as a much younger man catching the end on late night channel 5. And late night channel 5 is definitely where it belongs. Set in the distant future of 1999 the characterisations are pretty accurate; skinny jeans, leather trench coats and slang that I'll never understand. The 80's hair let's it down (-1 star). No the real issue is that this was made 4 years after the Terminator and yet the military cyborgs are so laughably fake that I'm surprised the kids don't die laughing.

Buy it if you want to reminisce, buy Terminator if you want a good film but probably just watch late night channel 5 instead.

Class of 1999 came out in 1989 and basically is set in the future where high schools have become so far out of control with violent students that not even police will venture into the areas where the schools are based, a robotics specialist has the ultimate weapon to re-control them again, cyborgs disguised as teachers, but their programmes go out of control as they become to murder the students, it becomes all out war between gangs and cyborgs with lots of action and shoot-outs, the movie certainly is a mix of elements of the terminator and troma's class of nuke em' high, the cast is all good' a few famous faces like Malcolm McDowell and Pam Grier as one of the cyborgs, there is some nice old school effects in terms of bloody violence in places all mostly practical effects, worth picking up if you love these retro cheesy sci-fi and horror type movies.

DVD has pretty decent picture, UNCUT (bloody injury detail and mild gore, cyborg gore, green blood)
features include trailer and filmographies.
1989, 92 minutes, Region 2 UK.
