I viewed this on standard def dvd when originally released and had this awhile on hd-dvd, so about time I got around to rewatching it in glorious
high definition.

Starting off with a flashforward hostage sequence,engagement party,then 10 minutes in the mission begins and... Wow!
Nothing can prepare you for the incredible sequences that follow, with just enough space between them to enable you to catch breath.

Cruise is well settled in the Ethan Hunt role, and better still (unlike the practically 'one-man show' which was M:I:2) is assisted by an IMF 'team', all of whom get some reasonable screentime too.
Back again is stalwart 'buddie' Ving Rhames, but most prominent is the wonderful Maggie Q (couldn't accept her as a 'baddie' in [ASIN:B000V6YRPM Die Hard 4.0 (2 Disc Special Edition) [2007] [DVD]), just check out THAT red dress in the Lamborghini/manhole scenes!

Philip S. Hoffman makes a superb villain, better than most recent Bond/Die Hard types.

This is preposterously good entertainment and made for high definition.
The picture has that 'hot' high contrast look (like Die Hard 4.0 [Blu-ray] [2007] and The Island [HD DVD] [2005) which suits this type of movie well.
The lossy 5.1 DD+ soundtrack simply rocks, (shame the blu-ray version has no lossless PCM or TrueHd soundtrack either so will probably look and sound the same).

It is also nice to have some special features in full high definition, which does make some fairly routine featurettes more enjoyable to watch.

If there is to be an M:I:4 then I hope J.J. Abrams directs again as he has delivered some absolutely breathtaking action set-pieces here (with a little help from his friends, obviously).

If you are after thoughtful drama, you are in the wrong place though.
