5.0 out of 5 stars Essential Stuff, 16 Oct 2006
By PalominBeaut (Hull, UK) - See all my reviews
A great box-set at a fantastically low price price. The first two discs are totally classic and the last two contain some good songs mixed with lesser material. Good booklet too with lots of rare photos and information.

A must buy if you are thinking of getting the best of set released last xmas as all tracks on that bar one are presented here and the sound quality here is far superior due to the remastering.

So, buy, buy, buy and get down and get with it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Boxed and best, 25 Sep 2006
By 12stringbassist "Ian" (NorthWest, UK) - See all my reviews

One of the great problems with a band like SLADE is that, for many who weren't fortunate enough to have been around at the time, they are known only as 'that band who did that Christmas record'... or worse still, as a set of glam rock brickies, along with The Sweet and T.Rex.

That's a pair of great understatements and falsehoods concerning a long and distinguished career, which took in around twenty albums and a fantastic run of singles which turned all of the band members into household names in the seventies. Most everyone who had ears knew a SLADE record when it came on the radio and many could name all four of the band.... something previously reserved for the likes of The Beatles and The Rolling Stones. Can anyone who's reading this name all of Oasis? I thought not. Sorry, Noel.

This 4CD box set aims to set the record straight and let people who care to listen hear that Slade were one helluva rock band. The most important thing here is the music - even though the 72 page booklet will thrill most fans, with its exclusive and unseen photos, Keith Altham essay and band comments.

Essential.

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally Slade get the box set that they've long deserved., 6 Oct 2006
If you've not got any Slade discs in your collection then now is the time to put that right and this is the set to do it with. All the early 70s classic singles are there along with those from the band's Indian summer in the early 80s. However, alongside the hits (that have been compiled so many times before)and in equally well remastered sound quality are dozens of choice album tracks and rare B-sides (many released on CD for the first time).

This collection follows the band in its struggle to break in to the big time, its period of domination of the UK glam rock scene, its period in the doldrums when punk rock took over and then its rebirth courtesy of an against all odds live performance that stole the show at the 1980 Reading rock festival. Forget the garish glam fashion and trappings and just listen to what a great band Slade were and how the songwriting team of Lea and Holder had its finger on the pulse of the British public like no other since Lennon and McCartney. Once you've played these 4 discs to death in amazement then buy the Slade Alive anthology (3 live albums and the Reading live EP on 2 CDs). Great though the studio material undoubtedly was, Slade excelled as Live Act - a fact that sustained them when their record sales dwindled in the late 70s and then brought them back from the dead to chart several more hits and even finally break into the American chart.

4 CD set with a superb booklet. This has to be the bargain of the year ...and yes it includes the Xmas song!

This is the first comprehensive box set of THE most successful singles band of their time. Slade seem to have been rather unfairly negelected in the CD era. Read more
