Product Description

Manufacturer's Description
With an Olympus SP-510 UZ by their side, photographers need never miss the action again. Thanks to its powerful 10x optical zoom lens (equiv. to 38-380mm on a 35mm camera) they'll be able to reach out to distant subjects and bring them in for closer scrutiny. The 7.1 million pixel resolution means that every detail will be there to see. Should anyone need to delve deeper still, in 3.0 million pixel resolution, a Fine Zoom option can increase the magnification of the optical zoom to a phenomenal 15x.

Nothing escapes the gaze of the SP-510 UZ, even when the sun starts to set. Olympus BrightCapture Technology comes into play boosting maximum ISO value to an amazing 4000* allowing the camera to deliver great results even in low-light conditions Energy efficient to the extreme, the SP-510 UZ needs just one set of AA batteries for up to 630** shots. So, what with its powerful zoom, high resolution, great low light capabilities, and energy efficiency, photographers using the SP-510 UZ can continue shooting way into the evening. Even if the light fails, they know that their camera won't.

For wildlife and sports photographers in particular, the SP-510 UZ offers a huge advantage. Its 7.1 million pixel CCD and 10x optical zoom (equiv. to 38-380mm on a 35mm camera) can be used to pick out either a distant zebra, or footballer, to fill the frame in breathtaking detail without scaring them off or interrupting play! And, when shooting in 3.0 million pixel mode, a special Fine Zoom option is available that boosts magnification to a phenomenal 15x, making the zoom equivalent to a 38-570mm zoom on a 35mm camera. Yet in spite of these impressive specifications, the SP-510 UZ remains a remarkably compact and easy to use camera.

Framing photos is made simple and straightforward with a 6.4cm LCD screen, large enough to show off even quite small details. This naturally doubles up as a monitor to view shots on, once they've been saved to either the camera's internal memory or an optional xD-Picture Card. Of course, the use of the SP-510 UZ isn't confined to just sports and wildlife, as 21 pre-defined scene modes are available to make life easy in a wide range of shooting environments including Landscapes and Beach&Snow. To keep the more ambitious photographer happy, the camera also offers Aperture and Shutter Priority exposure, as well as full Manual control, so they can let their creativity and experimental impulses run wild.

In case the animal being photographed is nocturnal, or the match is being played under floodlights, the SP-510 UZ has been equipped with Olympus' unique BrightCapture Technology. This increases the camera's sensitivity to light by boosting the maximum ISO value to a striking 4000*, lessening the need to use flash and preserving the atmosphere of the ambient light. Faster shutter speeds can also be used, helping to avoid blurry images due to camera shake very handy for a camera with a powerful zoom lens.

A powerful 10x zoom lens and great capabilities in low light make the 7.1 million pixel SP-510 UZ a great choice for people who want to capture the action, no matter where it is, whether that's at a family party or out in the wilds.

Product Description

Thanks to its powerful 10x optical zoom lens photographers can reach out to distant subjects and bring them in closer. And there's no need to worry when the sun starts to set and natural light fades away thanks to Olympus' own BrightCapture Technology, the SP-510UZ delivers great results even in low-light conditions, boasting the highest light sensitivity ISO 4000 of any currently available digital compact camera. Furthermore, the SP-510UZ is energy efficient with just one set of AA batteries will last for up to 630 shots.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply a super camera, 1 Jan 2007
By Dr. P. J. A. Wicks (London, England) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER) (REAL NAME)
The photo website "Flickr" has a neat feature that lets you see what cameras people are using to take photos uploaded to the site. This camera got a massive boost at Christmas time so I imagine that like me, many people got this as a pressie! This was to replace (or support?) my Sony Cybershot T7, which is a great little camera for party shots but lacks the power and zoom to take good outdoor shots. Enter the Olympus.

From the point of view of someone who uses a camera phone and a little Cybershot, this camera is much bigger and bulkier, certainly needs a carry case or shoulder strap. However for those of you technophobes who have been lugging around 35mm cameras anyway, this will feel light and compact! So was it worth beefing up? You bet!

The zoom is excellent. You can get wildlife shots without scaring the birds away, or tightly frame shots in a busy scene. The zoom is fast and smooth, and the anti-shake system works quite well.

With a big storage card in there (go for at least 1gb) you're talking ~650 high quality shots, or 20 minutes of video. The battery life is excellent; many cameras with proprietary rechargables suffer the dreaded "memory effect" and become smaller in capacity after a few hundred charge/discharge cycles. Not so disposable AA batteries which are of course available anywhere in the world!

The controls are logically placed (for a righty) and there are modes ranging from the freestyling and complex right down to idiot-proof. For instance the "scene" setting gives you one of 20 possible presets for outdoor shots, snow, sports, indoor, or even a special mode for taking pictures to upload to Ebay for online auctions! The rapid-shot mode is quite good for taking action shots although is not as good as a proper SLR with all the gubbins. Good enough for my purposes though! Integrated flash is good, light amplification is good, downloading to PC is good... Software's a bit annoying but just skip it and use Windows XP default software and a third-party package for editing.

Oh, one more thing, the viewing screen is a whopper and very good resolution. If you prefer to have an eyepiece to look through there's one of those too, also digital so it's slaved to the zoom. Very useful for long distance shots.

I've still got the Cybershot for social occasions where a little gizmo is all that's required, but for all other times this camera is a really solid performer and highly recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great camera at an affordable price, 25 Nov 2006
By T. CORBALLIS "Toby Corballis" (London, England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
When buying a camera it's important to keep in mind what sort of images you want to take. Important factors to comnsider are:

amount of optical zoom (don't be fooled by digital zoom - your compute can achieve this for you),

number of mega-pixels - bearing in mind that the higher the number the more disk space each photo will take. To achieve true 35mm quality you need to get about 7M Meg-pixels; quite common these days.

Battery life, and whether you want an internal battery (smaller) or the ability to use shop batteries (take more size but you don't have to carry a charger round with you).

Red-eye reduction - unless you happen to be a vampire in which case maybe you want to enhance the look.

Preview screen size. If it's too small then it can be awkward to review the 12 pictures you just took of the cute squirrel in the garden.

For the price, I don't think the SP-510UZ can be beaten. OK so the 10x optical zoom (whoch in 35mm terms is a whopping 38 - 380mm) and battery compartment make it bigger than some of its rivals but not so much that I found it a problem. The trade off is that I can zoom in on objects that are much futher away and I don'thave to worry about the charger.
The preview screen is generously sized making it easier to review pictures.
So far (two weeks) I haven't been able to fault the red-eye reduction and at 7.1MP the picture quality is just up there with 35mm.
Do I have any complaints? Not really (unusual for me) apart from I did need to read through the manual once to understand how all the features worked and I guess it would be a bit far fetched to call it pocket-sized but buy it is small enough to carry round without being too intrusive.
I haven't seen anything else yet that matches it for price. My advice? Buy one. If you want to take a quick pic of your mates down the pub, use yoiur phone. Otherwise, get this little baby and shoot away to your hearts content.

4.0 out of 5 stars Digital Virgin viewpoint, 4 Dec 2006
By H. Foster "H Foster" (England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I agree with the first review of this camera, it is larger than many digital cameras, but it makes up for it in quality of pics. I had never used a digital before but wanted something quality and this provides that. The zoom is super and so is close up photography. The main down is the manual and online manual, I haven't found either helpful and had to get a friend to assist. I use the HP photoprint help and struggle to understand the manual as it assumes knowledge I don't have (digital wise. You don't ever have to worry about charging it and the batteries are available absolutely anywhere and if you just take a spare set with you then you will have enough power to take 1200 pictures. The camera itself has hardly any memory, but with 1GB memory card (purchased separately) I can do anything I'll ever need to do. I am delighted with it and it suits my purposes well from great landscapes to close up flowers etc. Well done Olympus, but you do need to improve the CD and manual for people like me.
