Ive only just heard this album and im really disappointed.Ive seen a few interviews with Shadow himself and he knows in advance that this album isn't going to please the majority of his fans.
The album has a lot of hip-hop/rap samples which I just can't dig.When I i first heard the album was rap-orientated,I was expecting a DJ Format kind of twist to it.However,unfortunately the beats on this album haven't got me twisting at all.Nonetheless,towards the end of the album,you can start to hear the more classic Shadow breaking through.I think it would be better to go see him in concert on this album as it would definately have a decent atmosphere.On CD, it just doesnt reach the high standards that Shadow himself sets.
For buyers new to Shadow,id recommend purchasing "Entroducing" or "The Private Press" before looking at this one.For existing Shadow fans,I hope your not as disappointed as I was.

Let me first start by saying that I have been a huge DJ Shadow fan for some time. Really, i think the guy is a genius.... But that, sadly, is entirely based on his previous work.
I am really disappointed by the new album ... For me there arent any stand-out tracks that will become classics but worst of all the handful of bad tracks .... well, i just cant listen to them.
I am refering to the tracks with the 'bad attitude' raps in, most of which are in the first half of the album.
If i wanted to hear a load of rappers shouting, swearing and calling eachother the N word i would have bought some other rap trash. Honestly, its not big and its certainly not clever. Neither is having a track with sound effects of gun fire in the back ground ... what the hell is this ? Westwoods rap show?
Anyway, these tracks aside ... the rest is OK. But not really anything more than that. I had wanted to give it a 2/5 .... but i just couldnt bring myself to do it to the Shadow.
I can't begin to tell you how sad this make me feel.

I have to say that this album was disappointing but not totally unexpected. I saw Shadow live a few months ago and you could measure on a graph of audience appreciation the point at which he took a U-turn off Downtempo Avenue and drove straight into Rap'n'Indie Land (Population: 1).

For those expecting the natural progression seen from Endtroducing to Private Press you might expect more of the same with a new twist - you'd be wrong. Make no mistake this is a rap album with no discernable reference to earlier works. There's even some indie-rock on there courtesy of Chris Martin. It all sits together as well as -erm- NWA and Radiohead. (Look out for guest appearance of Animal from the Muppets on Track 9!)

I'm sure that the MTV crowd are going to love this - me? I had to put "Midnight In A Perfect World" on loop until the bad voices went away.
