Amazon.co.uk Review

In the first Prime Suspect, Helen Mirren's ballsy woman Detective Chief Inspector Jane Tennyson battled the boys club and their sexist barbs to prove herself in a chauvinist department. In Prime Suspect 2, she's assigned to head a racially charged murder investigation in a largely African/Caribbean neighbourhood. It's politics as usual in the image-conscious organization, so the superintendent adds to the team black Detective Robert Oswalde (Colin Salma), a sharp but hot-headed investigator who has just broken off an affair with Tennyson. Now Tennyson grapples with her own conflicted feelings while fighting political and public-relations battles both in the media and within the police system itself in the midst of investigating the labyrinthine case. Between the scant clues left to sift, a prime suspect on the verge of death himself and divisions in her own team that result in a devastating death, Tennyson soon begins to suspect she's been hung out to dry by the department. Screenwriter Allan Cubitt dives into the murky waters of volatile racial and social relations to create an even more complex and compelling mystery in Tennyson's second appearance and Mirren rises to the challenge to explore the contradictions of an uncompromising cop in a compromising position. --Sean Axmaker

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic Cop Drama, 27 Dec 2003

This review is from: Prime Suspect 2 [DVD] [1992] (DVD)
Helen Mirren returns as DCI Tennison in this complex psychological police thriller. A body discovered under garden paving slabs initiates a murder investigation, but difficult race-relations and deeply buried family secrets impede the inquiry. Sharp scripting, cinematography, and editing propels the narrative forward, with the excellent cast (standouts are John Benfield as Detective Superintendent Kernan and Colin Salmon as Detective Sergeant Robert Oswalde) moving easily from tense, procedural scenes to emotionally fraught climaxes and confrontations. And Mirren, whether interviewing a dying man at his bedside or arguing with a spurned lover, is magnificent as the constantly harassed detective. A classic.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sheer brilliance but buy the BOX set !, 31 Jan 2009
By Art "Art" (Staffordshire) - See all my reviews
We knew we were going to enjoy seeing ALL of the Prime Suspects when we ordered them, so we bought the box set.

We found we had FORGOTTEN what happened in the ones we had seen, and were flabergasted at how good Helen Mirren and the stories were as we worked through all 7 years.

We are big fans of '6 Feet Under' and can report that this is the British equivalent in quality in every way. However, whereas 6FU was an 'ensemble cast', Helen Mirren holds Prime Suspect together like Super glue!

Please DO NOT buy each year individually, just get the WHOLE set in one go in the box, you won't be disapointed - it is unmissable
