5.0 out of 5 stars Classic-style adventure game for all ages. , 23 Mar 2007
By Sir Gamer (London) - See all my reviews
Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
It's not often that I am able to play a good computer game with my children (aged 8 and 14), as too many recent titles contain pointless 'adult' material (read: puerile).

Barrow Hill, although very creepy, does not contain any cruelty, blood or pointless gore. Instead, the designers have crafted a classic-style adventure game (some reviewers don't seem to understand what that is), which is perfectly balanced when it comes to clues and puzzles. If you want a few hours of mindless violence, go find something else, but if you prefer a well crafted, beautifully written adventure game (which provides approx 20 hours of non-linear gameplay) look no further.

It's a great game to play alone, and even better with company. Unlike many other games, you won't bore your friends to death with endless button thumping, instead, you'll find they are as involved in the puzzle solving and exploration as you are. A rare treat! Barrow Hill is a great game for those who love the genre, others may want to stick with the arcade.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fun Game, 1 Jul 2007
By Angus Konstam (Edinburgh, Scotland) - See all my reviews
Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
Barrow Hill restores the balance to 'point and click' adventure games. If you're bored with making war, killing things, city building, or wearing your fingers out from trying to reach the next platform... then you might enjoy this nicely done, (very atmospheric and slightly creepy), brain teaser. The puzzles are fun but not mind bending. The solutions are logical and make sense within the context of the game. A certain amount of reading is required but the various text add to the story and reveal many clues. Be warned, a couple of inventory items are well hidden. I wouldn't say there's any 'pixel hunting', but it's important to see the whole game, every screen. The music and voice acting add to the spooky environment. This game does a good job of playing on our fears of 'things that go bump in the night'. I appreciated that there was a choice of endings. Playing this game a second time might reveal interesting bits that could be missed the first time around. This is a first time effort from independent producer Shadow Tor and I'm looking forward to their next release.

5.0 out of 5 stars Super, interesting puzzle game in creepy setting., 1 Oct 2007
Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
It's a brilliant game at a great price, an adventurous gamer will not be disappointed. It's dark, scary and pagan out there in the woods! Barrow Hill is a wonderful, detailed and exciting adventure game.

I finished the game (20+ brilliantly eerie hours) over the last week and can happily say it's one of the best adventure games I have played (and I've played alot of puzzle based adventure games!). The puzzles are logical, devious and very solvable, each one weaved expertly into the storyline and locations. I never felt 'stuck' or bored, as there are many clues scattered throughout the gameworld. Speaking of gameworld, I really should mention Barrow Hill's unusual and quirky setting; as well as the actual druidic stone circle (thousands of years old) there are abandoned farm buildings, a creepy service station and desolate motel rooms to explore, as well as a square mile of richly detailed countryside.

Barrow Hill is easily the most realistic game to depict England's green and pleasant land, even if it is the creepier side of the landscape around us. The makers of the game have gone to great lengths to make sure Barrow Hill looks like the Cornwall we know, so there are plenty of signs and sights from the English countryside.

If you like adventure games, with strong story telling and great puzzles then give Barrow Hill a go. It's well worth the price, and will sit on my shelf for many years to come!

Barrow Hill also ran flawlessly on my computers (no bugs, not a single one), which include Windows ME, 2000, XP and Vista.

It's a brilliant game at a great price, an adventurous gamer will not be disappointed. It's dark, scary and pagan out there in the woods!
