3.0 out of 5 stars Good, but should be better., 15 Sep 2006

Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
Firstly it should be stressed that Joint Task Force is not a simulation of modern warfare. The game offers great fun and semi-realism with very nice visuals. All weaponry is fully licenced and the attention to detail in motion captures and vehicle and building textures is outstanding.

Gampeplay is rewarding, but only in the traditional RTS sense.
JTF is not a ground breaking game, whilst infantry generally use correct tactics their use of cover is poor and some realism has been sacrificed for playability with weapon power and hitpoints. (A TOW anti-tank missile takes several shots to take out a tank for example.)

If you want a fun experience that will have good longevity (There is quite a large community and the developers seem keen to support modability, one patch already having been released, as well as the included editor)then Joint Task Force is a good buy. Overall JTF is a good game, but not one that you will still be playing in a years time.

1.0 out of 5 stars bad timing for this release, 27 Sep 2006

Fun:1.0 out of 5 stars
In my opinion, this game is going to suffer badly from the timing of this release. Why? Well, just look at the various game sites offering demos and publishing dates for up-and-coming releases and see what else is due out soon - not least of which is Company of Heroes. I've seen the demo of Company of Heroes, and I have to say it is way in advance of JTF in terms of graphics. I aslo found the control method of JTF quite tricky, especially when it came to trying to direct your men into a building. I could go on listing the bad points which come to mind when comparing JTF to Company of Heroes... and that is my point. Had this game come out earlier, prior to COH's dramatic press coverage and the demo release, this comparison would not be there, and I may well have considered this game in a different light. But like it or not, Company of Heroes is, if the demo is anything to go on, about to raise the bar by some considerable measure in the rts games field. Looking back on other rts games from the past, JTF has similarities to the Commandoes series, but then again it suffers badly from this comparison - the Commandoes games were much more detailed with a greater degree of control over each character. And once again, I would have to say that the graphics compare badly. In view of how old the Commandoes series is now, that is not good news.

JTF is a playable game with no bugs to report, which I suppose is something worthy these days, and if you are a keen fan of the genre, this is yet another game to have a bash at. But there are other much better rts games out there which you can pick up for a lot less than the current asking price for this one.
