Firstly I think the previous reviewer misunderstands the definition of a live recording in the context of the BBC Sessions. Live does not specifically refer to being broadcast live, but the idea that the song was recorded "live" e.g. with all the band members playing at the same time, as opposed to a multi-tracked studio album. With most BBC Sessions material I've come across (for the instance Jimi Hendrix Experience sessions), it seems it was the norm for most BBC material to be recorded for a show in advance and then broadcast some days later. Therefore the title of "Free Live at the BBC" is not at all misleading.

Disc 1 contains some excellent material all of very good quality including the first two tracks which are from Free's very early days as a band in 1968. Both tracks are blues numbers and give you an insight into Frees raw bluesy sound. Tracks 3-12 are all very good renditions of various tracks (although the beginning of "I'll Be Creepin' is missing because Paul Kossoff taped over it). Tracks 13-20 encompass two takes of "Be my Friend" and five takes of "Ride on a Pony", neither of which demonstrate Free performing at their best, and the sound quality on all takes of "Ride on a Pony" (never one of their best songs IMHO) is marred by low quality vocals.
It's worth noting that most of the tracks on disc 1 plus one version each of the "Be my Friend" and "Ride on a Pony" takes have already been released on the re-mastered albums. Bit cheeky really!

Disc 2 contains two afternoon concerts hosted by John Peel, although he is never heard between the tracks, as this was presumably missing or erased. Each track just fades up at the beginning and fades down at the end. Tracks 1-4 of Disc 2 are of very poor quality and as one reviewer stated only worth something in terms of their historical importance. Tracks 5-9 are much better and the quality is good enough to enjoy them, despite some radio interference (sounds like morse code!) in the quiet passages. These tracks we're taken "off the air" by the way. Tracks 10-11 are of poor quality, possibly worse then the first four.

There was a heartbreaking amount of Free's material lost from the BBC archives and this compilation really is a bitter-sweet sample of what could have been had the BBC been more careful with their tapes. The album is compromising of its own admission and in conclusion I agree with the sentiments that this is truly for die-hard Free fans. If you want to hear Free live at their very best buy the "Free - Live!" album as this contains fantastic performances of their songs with vastly superior sound quality. The album was disappointing for me, especially since I'd looked forward to its release for so long.

As a long time fan of Free I looked forward to these CDs a lot. The first one starts well, with a couple of blistering tracks from very early Free recordings. Sadly about half way through the quality of recordings deteriorates, and the number of re-takes of Ride on Pony is too much for me to listen through even on the way to work. Not what I'd expected with the BBC logo on the CDs. The second disc sounds very like it was recorded on a hand-held cassette tape recorder with a dodgy battery, and is worth one listen (just for the record) but is unlikely to ever beat Free Live remastered into the CD player. If you have the money spare and already own Free Live and the remastered Free CDs (ie you're a real fan) then consider buying, but otherwise stick to the studio recordings... or buy a ticket to see Paul Rogers live.

I agree entirely with Barry D below. I am a big Free fan, and got this a couple of days ago expecting quality alternative recordings of all my favourites. I should have taken more care. All the good stuff on disc one has already been added to the remasterd CDs, while the "in concert" stuff on disc 2 was recorded "off air" (ie by a fan sat in front of his radio with a microphone)and sounds like it.
