I recorded this documentary on to video when it was first shown on TV in the early 80s. When I saw that it was available on DVD I thought that the transfer on to the new format would somehow improve the viewing quality: unfortunately not - it is grainy and lacking in definition (just like my original 25 year old videotape).

I guess I was expecting too much as the original cameras & film used on this documentary obviously don't compare to today's modern quality.

Picture quality aside, this DVD does contain some great on-track action footage, especially of Stirling Moss, Derek Bell & John Surtees driving the original cars and discussing their experiences with the teams for which they drove.

Be warned, the actor Robert Hardy presents/narrates this, and his very theatrical delivery can be quite waring after a while. The music soundtrack is typically 80s as well - think swirly Vangelis style synthesizers.

I bought this from a nostalgic point of view and I should imagine it would probably only suit hardened sports car enthusiasts.
